At my age, remembering childhood is tough!

When I Was A Child;One-of-a-Kind

by Reese Turner

With no lack of appreciation at all,
With love and respect to mom and dad,
With prayers of Thanks to God for life,
Still, I say, my childhood was partly bad!

Oh, I had love – sometimes too much –
“Smothered” at times, it seems.
And I admit, I feel some guilt to now
Debate a childhood worthy of dreams.

But, I was their one and only child;
It ain’t “all the toys at Christmas”, no!
When things broke or got messed up
They’d blame the only kid they know.

Out to eat? Boring! With whom to talk?
I’d eat, still an hour ‘til they’re through!
If I had a bad day, with whom to vent?
“Hush, you’ve got homework to do.”

At the bottom line, we prayed, we played
They taught me about love, family, truth,
Patriotism, God, the importance of hard work;
They began to make me a man - in my youth.
