Nettie Nostalgia

by pome lover

Nettie Nostalgia recalls days of old—
Roasting marshmallows and ghost stories told;
Dads who met boys with dire threats of their fate
If they brought their daughters home late from a date.

Innocent days—kids could ride bikes for hours,
“But be home for supper” (and afterwards, showers!)
Small towns where friendly folks knew everyone,
Slower-paced lives, time for family fun.

Kids played outside—exercise and fresh air—
Cell phones and laptops weren’t seen anywhere;
TV’s were snowy and just black and white
But families watched them together, at night.

Good manners used at all times was a must
And singing in churches on Sundays, robust.
Kids showed respect for their parents and friends
Friendships were earned and bad sports didn’t win.

Marriages lasted much longer back then—
Promises made weren’t tossed in the dustbin
Patriotism was practiced at school,
And most folks aspired to the old Golden Rule.

 A time when one’s “word” was the mark of a “man,”
With trust and respect in the shake of a hand
And people in politics actually served
The people who voted them in, well deserved.
