A Family Picnic

My husband, Sam, is a paramedic. We haven’t been together as a family for ages, so today’s been special.
At long last, we’re allowed some freedom! Our son, Danny, was jumping with excitement when he heard the news. I fixed a hamper then we drove to a pretty riverside spot, where we could breathe easy without our masks and pretend that all was well with the world.
After we’d been swimming, Sam got a fire going. We sat around it, each holding a stick with a sausage on it getting charred to just the right degree. Simple pleasures — fun times with family in the heart of beauty.
Later, going home in the car, Danny started chanting: “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” The little devil was relentless; so I joined in. Of course Sam had to stop and get some. Who doesn’t love ice cream?
