Your poem rhymed, made sense, and captured the essence of Poe. Though I believe black cats get an unnecessarily bad rap. Good luck in the contest. Very nice job. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and stay healthy .

I agree with you, we have a black cat in the family, Miss P, and she's gentle and loving. Just not to our furniture..lol. Thank you for reading my poem. :)

Although this is a complete travesty and my black cat, Paddy is plotting his revenge on you for stirring trouble, I have to say it is a piece of poelike horror and most competently written. The informed folk lore here in Britain is that a black cat crossing your path from right to left is a harbinger of good luck, from left to right and all your worst fears hold good.

That's interesting. It's different here, it makes you wonder how these superstitions get started. My mom was from England and would never allow us to put a wreath on the door at Christmas time because apparently that was a sign that someone in the house died.( An English thing) . We also have a black cat who is very gentle and loving( she's pictured here) Thank you so much for reading.

Super job with this Nod to Poe challenge poem. I got the Raven references multiple times plus the "tell-tale heart" also. The eerie moonless night and hints of curses all remind me of Poe. Hope you do well in the contest!
I also like the picture of your cat!

Thank you. Miss P is a real sweetie and very gentle, she came from a shelter when she was a year old. Have a happy Halloween.

Dear Mystery Writer, (--wink--)
This was a great entry for the Poe-animal contest. *smile* It's truly fun and quite unexpectedly awesome in the Poe parts!
These are the references I caught easily:
--> the raven (above the door)
--> harbinger of death
--> nevermore
--> tell-tale heart
--> Poe
And these were my favorite lines/stanzas:
*So be wary if you come across,
a feline black as a moonless night.
For it may be your life that's lost
and your cursed soul will soon take flight.
*As black as night, the cat blends in,
with glowing eyes, intensely creeping.
Cross their path you'll never win,
the curse begins and leaves you weeping.
All in all, a terrific poem for the contest. I wish you the best of luck!

It's nice to know your cat Miss P is friendly.
In your poem, I like how you have referenced Poe's raven. The evil mystery of historic associations with a black cat are well covered in a poetic manner.

What an absolutely lovely poem! Definitely did an excellent job using the same cadence as Poe did. I love the picture you included of your cat. As a cat lover I feel we need more adventures with this kitty! Six stars and well deserved!

You did a great job, Mystery Author, with your contest entry. The image is perfect. Your color scheme works well with this eerie tale. The rhymes are super as is the flow. I like the use of tell-tale heart, the raven, and nevermore as nods to Poe. The similar last verse of the first is a great way to end your poem.
Thanks for sharing.
Best wishes.
Respectfully, Jan

You even use the famous nevermore. This is a wonderful tribute to Poe just in time for Halloween. The word choices are perfect. Your poem flows so naturally with no word seeming force to keep the perfect rhyme. I love the tribute. Great job.

We humans have created a kind of mystique around black cats and I owned one over ten years ago and he was an amazing cat, funny, warm and loving. Black cats are associated with witches and Halloween and your poem is kinda scary as you pay tribute to Poe here, love Dolly x
