I totally agree with you that no gun has ever killed anyone without being in human hands. Guns are necessary where I live to keep down the overpopulation of deer and several other animals. One thing about every case of mass violence is people knowing the killer was a little (or very) off center and often antisocial. Mental health needs to be better taken care of. Reagan's greatest error was closing down mental institutions.

We had one gun massacre about thirty years ago and tightened gun laws considerably. It is much harder to get a gun and one must show an appropriate reason or need.(eg farmers to keep wild animals at bay).
It's too late for that for the U.S., however surely mental health checks can be more rigorous. One doesn't let children play with sharp knives or drive cars. They don't have the ability to handle them wisely, and yet inappropriate people with significant mental health issues play with guns. Bigger and more powerful personal weaponry in the name of self defence is not the answer. What happened to the motto "in God we trust"? Maybe for many it is "In guns we trust". I am constantly shocked and horrified by your statistics re mass murders. I have no idea what the answer is for the US. People have such strong, entrenched, and uncompromising attitudes. Anyway. A thought provoking and well written article.

You are right, you will get a lot of comments about gun control. People are going to kill. It is the Cain/ Abel dilemma. He used a rock, so did David. They still stone people in middle eastern countries. Ban rocks. Sounds ridiculous. How about more mental health regulations. Better vetting for firearms. People are the problem. Gretchen

Brett, to me the whole thing is a disaster, and the world is looking on in disgust. Yes, gun crimes do occur outside the US, but not at the rate you're facing.
The three questions you're asking at the beginning of your essay is a complete nonsense outside the US. At least in Europe. They are none existing.
I'm wasting my breath, I know, so I say no more. Too much money is involved in this whole business in your country. Only one thing. I wonder what would happen the day a republican senator's son or daughter died in a mass shooting. I rest my case. All best. Ulla:)))

Why limit your question to a Republican? Why not a Democrat or an Independent? The unfortunate truth is in the US guns are not going to be banned. Perhaps cars, knives, and all other weapons people kill with should be outlawed as well? So banning guns is not the answer. Do appreciate your comments and the review.

As I've written many times before, but I've basically been ignored, if you make guns available to the public, (after all they are designed for one purpose, and one purpose only, to kill. If it's not easily available, how can a nutcase kill efficiently without a gun?) The second amendment is a sacred cow which no other nation has, it's not a symbol of freedom, it is now out of the pit of hell, wake up America, you are deceived! No other country makes them available to ordinary citizens without good reason. The devil truly rules. Blessings Roy

I'm with you here. I just read a post by a woman who would ban all guns, even guns in the hands of police officers. It might work if everyone was a peaceful, law-abiding citizen, but we have a lot of crazies out there. I watch some British mysteries, and it's frightening to see the officers go into a risky situation with no weapon. It's not just the mass murderers, it's the number of young people who go on shooting sprees in big cities like Chicago. No one sees upset by the number of innocent victims there. It seems that those who want to get a gun can obtain one, even of their state has strict gun laws. I'm for reporting behavior that indicates a potential for violence. Families should be aware and seek help if their child is sending up red flags with violent behavior. You add to your article by citing statistics and specific instances of gun violence. judi

Maybe our US officials need to go to Switzerland and take notes.
Switzerland has a stunningly high rate of gun ownership -- here's why it doesn't have mass shootings
The Swiss have strict rules for who can get a gun, and take firearm training very seriously.
Switzerland is a bit like a well-designed fort. Switzerland's borders are basically designed to blow up on command, with at least 3,000 demolition points on bridges, roads, rails, and tunnels around the landlocked European country.
People who've been convicted of a crime or have an alcohol or drug addiction aren't allowed to buy guns in Switzerland.
The law also states that anyone who "expresses a violent or dangerous attitude" won't be permitted to own a gun.
Gun owners who want to carry their weapon for "defensive purposes" also have to prove they can properly load, unload, and shoot their weapon and must pass a test to get a license.

I never thought I was going to say this, but Canada is not a safe country anymore. In my city, Edmonton, last week we had a trail of violence including two idiots shooting other people in their cars as they were driving by. Why do some idiots just for fun, shoot random people? Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

You take away the guns and that leaves knives. Jack the Ripper! Remember him? How about a Hammer? There are many ways to commit murder of you want to. Mow them down in a car. No, Guns are not the problem. I agree they need to be regulated, but they keep America free. I don't doubt that at all. This is just a thought. Nancy:)
