It must've been a glorious day for former slaves to be told they're free.
I, like you thought about the declaration of independence and realized that Black people were not considered equal. I'm not sure women were considered equal either.
All men are created equal. What a joke while officially blacks were free they faced a bunch of other problems besides, trying to figure out where to get the money to eat or the food to eat eat
Unfortunately, what followed was reconstruction and the Ku Klux Klan.
Eventually, Jim Crow became the law of the land in the southern states. A black man could not even look up to see a white man without risking a lynching.
And, they did not spare little boys. Little Emmett Till was beaten to death for supposedly whistling at a white girl. He was only fourteen That white girl eventually said she made it up, but he was still dead.
That was kind of the turning point in the right to freedom movement. The blacks were saying we've had enough we've had enough. So many more lives were taken for freedom. Martin Luther King came along improving many different things for Black people, but still the prize is not yet obtained And, King was assassinated
Thank you for writing this very important poem. I'm sure it's educational for a lot of people. I'm sure it's inspiring to Black people and people like my husband who was a civil rights worker

A timely and important Juneteenth poem. In Canada, the enslavement of African people was a legal instrument that helped fuel our economic enterprise. European traders and colonists in New France (Canada) practiced the buying, selling, and enslavement of Black people from the early 1600s until 1834 when slavery was abolished.
We usually don't talk about it though because in our minds history is something that happened last week.
A strong acrostic poem and many thanks for sharing. :)
