Much is said about the way psychopaths treat animals savagely and inhumane... it's a good indication of their evil nature.
Poor. Maw-Maw, Huck, Dewey. Their father is so cruel... it's a hard way to live. I hope their dad pay for his actions.
Well done, another engaging and well developed story. Good characters too.

Hello Gretchen,
another wonderful chapter. I see that the comment about forgiveness has sparked a few conversations. I don't know why it's so hard to forgive. I guess on the one hand we feel justified holding on to a grudge against someone we feel has wronged us. I have a time trying to forgive certain folks, but I still need to do it. We don't have the wisdom of God, nor the love, so if we're instructed to forgive, it's probably a very good thing to do. Thanks so much for sharing this gal.
Have a blessed evening.

I think people often confuse forgiveness with forgetting. There is no way to forget a wrong done to you, but forgiveness is a big part of moving on. At least, in my humble opinion. Thank you for this. A lot of people want revenge. Maybe forgiving and being able to live your life is the best revenge. Gretchen

Wow. I'm sitting on the edge of my seat reading this waiting for daddy to explode at someone.
Huck was right not to bury the snake with Ben and the chicken. And absolutely enjoyed your "meek shall inherit the earth" business,
Especially the last line:
Maybe, Ben and his lady chicken, inherited the earth and now they are becoming one with their inheritance.

This is one dysfunctional family with a monster for a father. I think the father has fallen over the edge of humanity and is a minion of the devil. I worry that he will kill Dewey or his wife. Or Huck will be forced into the position of having to kill him.

You are doing a good job of letting us get a goof look into the life of this family. I assume these boy are grown or nearly grown. These are simple people. The father is hard live with. Nothing pleases him and he has no respect of his family. He pushes every one around. The boy love and respect thier mother.

Huck is 16 and Dewey is a year or two older. And yes, the father destroys any happiness in the home on a regular basis. Thank you so much for this excellent review. Gretchen

The snake should have bitten their Dad . Though, it probably would have died from HIS poison. People like that don't deserve to breathe our air. Good writing. Karen

I've heard this idiom before I wonder what it's origin is."my daddy was born under a bad moon" I love the gentleness and respect for the deceased fowl.
This is a wonderful example of a visceral experience. I have all kinds of issues about forgiveness but I will leave them here.

I struggle with true forgiveness. Always have. Good to know I'm not alone. Thank you for this awesome review. Gretchen

I have a long dissertation on this. I was an advocate for children who had been sexually abused. I went to a workshop and the speaker made note of a book I had also seen. In the book there is a little dove talking to the childAnd they're talking about a lot of things that would interest a child. And the child has told this dove called love all about her abuse by her father. There was one page in there I just wanted to rip out and so did the speaker talk about that.
The dove says, " you're doing wonderful things but there's one thing you have to do. You have to forgive your father."
This is the page that both the speaker and I wanted to tear out. Here's the situation about forgiving someone that has abused you. For this girl to forgive her father it would mean she's basically saying oh it was no big deal I understand what you did and I forgive you. If we have to forgive someone then we give in twice. We're victim twice.
I don't forgive people simply because I don't feel it is my place to forgive somebody. That sounds like something God would do.
I did a group at my substance abuse unit where I worked and we talked about why we keep resentments because that's what we have if we're not doing the traditional forgiving or living as Eckhart Tolle would say one minute at a time things that are happening in the past happened but they aren't real anymore. It was quite amazing that different answers they came up, why we keep resentments.
I also take it one more step and that is i see it as something to do with past lives and so i realize they're doing something in this lifetime that they must have prescribed for themselves to learn and it may be partly a lesson for me also.
I hope this has given you a different angle to think about feel free to write back I would love to hear from you.

I do understand, but in certain circumstances I think forgiveness means to not hold onto the anger but the person is still held accountable. Or maybe that's just me. Don't worry Huck and Dewey are not going to forgive. Lol. You should write a piece about this. I'll bet the responses will be all over the board. Gretchen
-
All over the board for sure with the many many religious people on this group. And all the quotes from the Bible telling us that we are forgiven by God and all this stuff mine is a very practical concept of forgiveness because of those kids having been abused some things are unforgivable. If IWant to look at the people who have abused meI just realized it's part of their life and maybe what goes on after that is going to be Karma. Several of my bullies left this earth early they didn't get to live a really full life. I figure my father and I are going to have to do something in another lifetime this was not a good one. I know think he could have been more horrible than he was. Thank you for the suggestion. It would certainly get a rise out of some wouldn't it?

You've brought us some very good questions in this post. I have often wondered myself, how often do we forgive somebody. It's hard to do, but the Bible tells us too. I'm thankful God is willing to help us do that. Thank you for sharing. This is very well written.

This is something that an Englishman (me!) could not write.
You have the backwoods/hillbilly slang (is that what you'd call it?) that really gives authenticity (American authenticity) to the work. It is a great chapter and makes me hungry for more!
