I like how you capture the sense of smell and the manner in which you describe a seasonal moment which works at a local level but has universal appeal.

I don't know which is worse not enough rain or too much. Your poem enlightens the senses with the words "musty scent". It also makes the reader create two different pictures in their mind.

Thank you. My area hasn't gotten nearly enough what little we got recently was welcome. Too much isn't good either

Hi Beth, I can practically smell the musty scent of the earth. This poem is very powerful with only ten words. You have not wasted them. Each word contributes meaning to the poem.

Thank you, Kahlani. I love the smell of freshly water ground but there are a few who seem to think it stinks. lol

Lovely descriptive poem, l could actually recall the smell after the rain...it's intoxicating. There's no drought here, but I can imagine that it's terrible. Best of luck to you in the contest.

I enjoyed that type of scent expressed in this poem as a child. The early rains that preceded the Dry season would stir a scent of clay. We savoured the cool and relieving feelings. Well done, dear Beth. Creatively written. Regards

This really did make me think of a storm as I was reading, Beth. I love it when a good storm clears the air, particularly after a few hot days. An excellent piece with some beautiful imagery. I really enjoyed reading it.

This poem means a lot to me. As a student, I attended an Agriculture College with students from all over New South Wales, Australia. As you probably know, Australia is a vast land, much of it malnourished when it comes to rain. As a result, drought is a not uncommon experience. Not a good circumstance for a country reliant on regular rain. During my years at school, the lates 60's, parts of Australia experienced a rather prolonged drought. Several kids in my class were forced to leave school due to their family's loss of income. That was my first introduction to the financial impact of drought. That memory still sits with me. The difficulties of life on the land.

Thank you, Bob. I'm glad you are aware of how drought impacts lives. I'm sure where I live in the US isn't impacted nearly as much as parts of Australia. My particular section of Tennesse got very little rain this year but it was all around us. I see on radar a storm system coming toward but it would disappear or go in another direction before we got it. It meant I lost some plants I hated to see go because I wasn't able to get out and water them.

That is one scent that I love. When the soil starts to absorb the rain. It's a calming smell. I enjoyed your poem. Droughts are real problems and sometimes they can really mess up an ecosystem. Beautifully written. Gretchen

I love that scent too. My sense of smell isn't as strong as it once was but it used to be a favorite scent. Thank for the review.

It's always a pleasure to read these few short words that say so much. I don't know the first thing about poetry, but I sure do like sneeze poems. Hai-ku. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Ric. It has really dry around here and now that most of my plants outside are dead, today it is raining hard. Oh, well.
