This is a very interesting poem. I enjoyed very much listening to it. I can see how that you would write such a poem after listening to your dog barking at nothing.

Patricia,
Thank you for the kind review. They do bark at nothing.

As I read your poem, I was trying to visualize the shadow man and who that might be. It seems to me from your poem, you allow the reader to decide who that shadow man is. That actually is a good writing technique by allowing the reader to decide. Well done.

You're very welcome.
He is a mystery to me, Cecilia. Probably something different to every reader.

Shadow man is a much needed horror story. Shadows look innocent when you are watching them but it's when you turn your back that you should be worried. Listen to your dogs. They are telling you something. Nicely done.

Marilyn,
Thank you for the kind review. Problem with my dogs is they bark at the wind. Today Kratos was outside and something was in the pool and he started barking at it. It was just a paper towel. Go figure.

A poem that caught my attention after watching the documentary "Night Stalker". Also, dogs don't usually bark at nothing, It may be a cat, another dog or...?

Realize that dogs have a heightened sense of hearing, sight, and smell. They could be barking at something blocks away. Or, it could be right behind you because you were foolish enough to go out at night to investigate. STOP CREEPING ME OUT! lol I have goosebumps. Thank you.

I'm glad my leg isn't in that dog's mouth.

My pit bull is a gentle giant unless you mess with his boy. He's my son's dog and sometimes we pretend to smack my son and he lunges at us. I'd really like to see a stranger mess with my son. It wouldn't bode well for them.

I like that.

I think you develop the story of the shadow man well here and add the barking dogs with their 6th sense (possibly) to add an even greater sense of fantasy and mystery. Thanks for sharing, Cecilia. Debbie

I don't think that dogs bark at nothing, although I think the turn off switch ain't working heh heh, I think their hearing and sense of smell is a lot sharper than ours, but yes there is theory that they bark at shadows, while we jump at them, beautifully written dearvgirl, great post, blessings Roy

Only the Shadow knows.

One of the first poems I learned as a child was "Antigonish" by William Hughes, Mearns:
"As I was going up the stair
I met a man who wasn't there!
He wasn't there again today,
Oh how I wish he'd go away!
When I came home last night at three,
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall,
I couldn't see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don't you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don't slam the door...
Last night I saw upon the stair,
A little man who wasn't there,
He wasn't there again today
Oh, how I wish he'd go away..."
Thanks for writing your "shadow" poem as it brought back fine memories of discussing just what shadows were (and were not) with my very wise dad!
It does seem our four-legged friends have a keen sense for these things!

Karenina,
Thank you for the lovely review. I love that poem you posted. Ah another shadow man in the making.
Yes, sometimes my dogs freak me out with their barking at shadows.

Aren't they hilarious though? My dog (now passed) used to jump up like a frightened child--and then growl as if he was never "really" scared to begin with...

They are funny. Kratos does the same thing. If he's sleeping and you touch him, he jumps up with a confused look and then he runs. it's like what the heck is wrong with you? Dogs are funny]

Now, Cecelia, you'll have the dogs and I checking behind doors and in closets looking for that Shadow Man. But you are right, the dogs highly sensitive eyes and nose cause a lot of barking at times. Good poem.
