Very touching poem. This left tearing up as I hate to hear of children being treated like this. A wonderful job on this.

This is a good entry for the Minute contest.I enjoyed reading it.Abuse is a sad thing and no one should have to go through it.Is only with the help, love and guidance they can truly become survivors.God Bless

Thank you for your review. This was a challenge. It is always a challenge working with abuse but there is so much to assist with and it is necessary. Have a great day.

Great minute poem on domestic violence and child abuse, I am a victim of such abuse myself as a child, the impact on life has been devastating. Good luck on this, and have a great day

what a heartfelt poem, great imagery. and what a gratifying job. frustrating no doubt, stressful and hurtful, but just one life that is saved or turned around surpasses all the energy spent., you are a very compassionate person who truly cares. thxs for that
good luck in the contest

Thank you for reviewing. There are many who deal with victims daily. They need to be commended. Volunteering is just a small part.

ahhh, but a part that not so many endure.

Annie, my son is a cop in Las Vegas. I have said to him that I don't know how he can reign in his emotions when it comes to children being abused. He said it bothers him, but in his job you must remain calm.
This type of violence makes me so angry. My second wife was abused by every man she was with, but me. I have never put my hands on a woman except with showing those good feelings. She abused me when ever she got angry and out of control. She did it one too many times and I called the police. I told them she needed to go but hopefully not to jail. She was allowed to call the guy she was seeing and she left. The only time she came back was to get her things. We divorced six weeks later. I have never been happier being alone.
Your poem really resonated with me because your message was so well written and an excellent contest entry. I wish you good luck.
Enjoy the weekend,,,,,,Jim

Thanks so much for reviewing. I have found out that it is not only women and children that are abused but many men also. This was a surprise to me but I can see it when they are taught not to hit a woman. I too have found that being alone is not all that bad.

Child abuse can leave scars, both physical and emotional, for a lifetime. Some overcome it and become stronger, possibly even strong enough to help others so cruelly victimized. Yet others remain withdrawn and fearful for years, decades, or even the rest of their lives if no one ever helps them. And a few turn into bullies and pass the abuse on, even to their own children. In the last case, such abuse can be passed down through families for generations. Alcohol and/or drugs can be factors, but not always. You are to be commended both for the volunteer work you do to mitigate this issue and for raising awareness of it through this poem and any other means you chose not to mention in your notes. Superb.

Thanks so much for reviewing. I have found out that it is not only women and children that are abused but many men also. This was a surprise to me but I can see it when they are taught not to hit a woman. I was always on the other side of this when in nursing and doing the medical part. This is different but just as important.

Yes, and it is not always physical. Some people, both children and adults, have heard negative words about themselves for so long that they begin to believe it must be true. from that point on, they unknowingly become inescapable mental abusers of themselves. This not only damages their chance to ever find happiness, but also shortens their lives by rendering them more vulnerable to disease and even accidents. As the downward spiral continues, suicide becomes a real possibility too. And drugs supposedly intended to help them often make things worse. It's a tough problem. -- Mike

This is a very good entry into the Minute contest! Love it. So sad, but so true. I volunteered years ago at a Woman's Shelter and the condition some of these women and children come in. And, the saddest thing is they stay several days and return to it willingly subjecting their children (and themselves) to the abuse all over again. This is heart-felt and emotive to this reader. Good luck in the contest. God bless and hugs, Susanne

Thank you for reviewing. It is sad when they do go back to the abuse. There are more and more options open now and are taken advantage of so hopefully the abuse will turn around at some point.

Hi, Annie I cannot imagine even though I am aware it goes on at an alarming rate. I woul imagine many woem (and men) do not report it for one reason or another.
You cover a lot of ground quickly in this stanza:
"Most of her classmates now scorn her.
Works street corner.
Cut, blackened eye
But she can't cry."
Good job, my friend.

My thanks to you for your kind review. To often abuse goes on unreported and unknown by anyone other than the victim and the perpetrator. The goal is to stop the cycle.

No doubt you see some pretty awful things dealing with victims of violence, AnnieDawn.
Your Minute poem reminds the reader that there are many unfortunate people out there who are helpless victims, but that they can find strength within themselves and overcome. You created vivid imagery for the reader that makes the reader feel very sorry for these victims.
Well done! Best wishes for the contest!
