This is a good summary for others to look at and reflect on whether they identified with it or not: "In the height of the war, 1943, to be exact, I was convinced that evil came in two very distinct forms. One, blond haired, blue eyed, goose-stepping devils, and the other soulless, slanty-eyed Japs."
I like how you have inserted regional dialect.
This is very poignant: "I heard the crack of a rifle and Nick was down.& then how the enemy soldier showed him how to act dead. The enemy soldiers saved his life. A wonderful conclusion the struggle & questions of life. A+

This is an endearing and touching story Gretchen and it is delivered with your skilful pen to bring a tear to our eyes. We are taught to hate the enemy in war in order to make us fight without showing compassion, but here in the midst of the battle compassion shone like a light from Heaven. I loves your fine story, no wonder it won the contest, much enjoyed, love Dolly x x x

Hi Gretchen,
I wish that the politicians who put us into the wars would have to don the helmets and grab the guns and grenades and confront each other on the battlefield. Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen. There is always going to be evil in the world, and left unchecked, it will overtake us all. It needs to be dealt with. Obviously, there are good people everywhere. Thanks for sharing. Have a blessed evening.

This is a great story about a man's humanity to someone who was in theory his enemy. It is great to know that both young Americans made it back from the war and had good lives when the war was done. Sadly, we don't know the fate of the hero of this story.

Thank you, Carol. I never thought of the fate of the German. A valid statement. Gretchen

Great story, even though this is fiction, it would've been true, not all Germans were fanatical nazis, in fact only a smattering of Germans would've been. But yes, many human beings by nature are compassionate. Beautifully written as always, well done, blessings Roy
Typo : A slight glitch in your story Gretchen, Germany invaded Belgium in May 1940, English troops were long gone, they evacuated Dunkirk, France in June 1940, America didn't enter war until December 1941. Joined Britain in British isles January 1942. Then after D Day landings in June 1944.

This is good and true. The those we consider the enemy in war are juat like us. They are there because they are sent there by others and they are evil. War can change people sometimes into someone with different moral valujes but and act of kindness may change you ro the better. I loved the story.
