Excellent expression of opinion here and I like the idea of getting a little more for our money. I don't have day and night to be on the site any more and so dollars go very quickly especially if you want to reward your reviewers. Sad that one can "pay for their popularity" to an extent. Good job. I don't think the clubs really distract but they do command some reviews.

I found I?ve lost reviewers since the club choices have widened. Anyway, I?ll never reach 70 or 80 views ! Thanks so much for your kind review, hugs, Trisha

This is very nicely written. You have a positive attitude toward the site, which gladdens me. I like it, too. Self-expression is wonderful here and we do make good friends, and it does become an addiction of sorts. One thing I DO like about the clubs (and I don't participate often), they allow writers to focus on their POV which may not appeal to everyone in the general membership--such as spirituality or animals or whatever. Those drawn specifically to that topic will read those clubs' posts and I like that. Marilyn

Interesting response and I think many folks do use this site as therapy, and rightly so. We talk to therapists who represent a disinterested third party who can take in scandalous information and give a calm interpretation of where it's coming from. Here, he or she will also point out your tense shifting, overuse of commas, and remind your that a satori is whatever you didn't do.

Then you understand where I?m coming from ( or going to) LoL help me! Thanks so much for reviewing, I look forward to the last place in the contest. That is the usual honor bestowed on me. Never mind, I only paid $5.50 for that session of therapy.

Ah. Great writeup, and a lovely reflection on this site. I love some of your phrases - like "young oldies" and "one unending family of relatives you've never met."
Good luck with the contest!

Robbie, I always appreciate your reviews. Thanks for your good wishes, this contest brought out the dormant prose writer in me for a change.

It was a change for the dormant prose writer in me to venture out! I agree about FS being educational, as I learn many facts about nature, through my penning subject searches. The only ?beef? I have is the amount of money that it can take to get higher up in reader views It can take easily $25 from certificate to possible large numbers of readers. Unless of course you?re one very popular ,writer like you. ( I?m happy for you)

Yes, I agree about the many benefits of membership here at FS. The best one for me is the friendships I have found all over the world, some of which have become quite solid. Also, I have learned a lot from many of the non-fiction posts in a variety of fields of interest. Being an avid reader since childhood, I enjoy the creative posts in both poetry and prose too.
The promotion system for posts makes sense for its encouragement of reviewing, as the primary purpose of the site is for writers to constructively critique each other's work to foster improvement. Of course, the "house" MUST come out ahead to pay for site expenses. Otherwise, the fee for membership would have to be higher, possibly dampening membership growth and/or continuance, as many of us are not rolling in discretionary cash. I'd say Tom found just the right balance to keep the site viable.
Anyway, this is a worthwhile post with an amusing illustration.

Hi, WalkerMan! I reallly appreciate you reviewing my entry..I just looked at your latest posts and OMG we are light years away in quality and volume of penning. You have such a huge following, that it takes very little for you to get reviewed. Yes, I know I have a choice to do or not do,, review others? works or not, buy a contest place or not. It would take me ?beaucoup bucks? to have a shot at regular great reviews. I see and respect your loyalty to Tom for his system , I can?t afford to go to Las Vegas frequently! But I shall stay on my pathway to literary recognition by sheer determination and pleasure. Thanks again for your thoughts,
Hugs, Trisha

You are welcome, Trisha. When I began here just over two years ago, I had no following, no FS "cash" (nor real money to buy it), no idea about how the system favors early week posting because of the star allotment system, and no one I knew to ask about such things. I entered my very first post ("You Are There") in a free contest with committee judging; and, of course, it lost because it had relatively few reviews for lack of sufficient promotion. It's a good post, though; so, over the years since then, it has continued to receive reviews, despite lack of promotion. Meanwhile, little by little, my writing built up the following I have now. Still, that pales in comparison to the fan counts of members in or near the top ten.
This year, I am not even ranked, as all I have posted so far is two poems. The reason is that I am hugely busy helping some other FanStorians publish their first books. However, later today I will post a prose essay related to meeshu's important poem about abuse ("The Worm Has Turned"), based on my discussion with him following my lengthy review of his post. He is the top reviewer on the site right now, though he has been here for only three months. That has two significant benefits -- it raises FS "cash" for promoting his work, and it makes him known to others who will then review his own work as he posts it (possibly becoming his fans if they like it). So, my advice to you, which was given to me two years ago, is review the best writers here as often as you can, and you will see how that helps you. -- Mike

This is a very entertaining review of FanStory because of all the benefits & comparisons you cite. I especially like this novel definition of FS: "FS is a multi-aged family with the usual array of personalities." I also like how you compared promoting one's work to playing a slot machine. I am glad you shared your thoughts with us. Rod
