Fresh perspective on failure--compelling points. (Curious why you cast this as free verse with odd mid-line breaks--it's better suited to prose--you classified it as commentary fiction). I like the way you think!

doing [there=>THEIR] level best

Excellent job on this one. I enjoyed reading. I always said why can't they use a better word than failure it sounds so bad. I tried a new job one time it didn't work out. They said I had a failed trial period. I said to them why can't you use the word unsuccessful instead of failed. As you said in your writing it just sounds better. Since then they used unsuccessful instead of failed. Well done. Good luck in the contest.

Great comments about failure. Like the lines:
"Surely we must then realize no one truly can be a failure!
Especially, when someone is without question
doing there level best to put their best foot forward."
You might want to change "there" to "their."

Quite a controversy writing that seems to embellish the mind that stems from a pessimistic observation of life. Each individual as you say has that 'free will,' which endures your being of making the life you want.
good luck in the contest.

Thomas Edison once said something to the effect, " I didn't fail. I just found 999 ways of not making a lightbulb". And In some respects, I find failure or success, is a matter of perception. You just have to decide what direction you're going. And I asked the same question that you do, how can you fail if you've given your all? . Best wishes.

You are most welcome. I think it's too bad that there aren't more of us "on the same page".

This was fantastic! What a perceptive on how that word can be such a wall for many and keep us in the wrong frame of mind. Most do not put value on often used words, how they define us or break us. Again, this was a wonderful read and it speaks volumes...I wouldn't change a thing.
Thanks for sharing

Dear Mystery Writer,

Well, this was a thoughtful piece on the topic of failure - but I would consider this to be straight out prose, not free verse. I would strongly advise you to Google a definition of free verse and some of the features it contains and what sets it apart from other writing arts. It's not just 'free writing' (Sorry.)

Also:
--> doing (their) level best to put (their) best foot forward.

I do like your message. With some careful adjustments, you could have a quality entry! Thank you!

Robyn I write a lot of free verse I need no explanation, I have used a good number poetic devices , but because I always value your opinion I will re visit this.

I do not understand how one can call a child "a failure", particularly if that child is
"Flesh of one's own flesh", such a sad thing, I adore my children/grands, and could never call them that. It commits them to a life long sentence of disapproval, they unbelievably valuable. Beautifully written my friend, good luck, congrats, blessings Roy
