Very well-told story. I was around at the time and my husband drew a high number but my sister and her husband were packed to go to Canada when the last group called up was the one before her husband's. That war made many people make decisions they might not have chosen otherwise. In the paragraph where you were "thinking about my fiance . . ." there is an extra I. Best of luck with this.

Thank you for the great review Carol. I edited the paragraph. I appreciate the heads up. I read it several times and still missed it. Blessings!

Very interesting army story. I enlisted in the army during the early 70's, after my brother in law came back from Nam, with an earful of suggesting I join so I could.... a few VC. After my first permanent station at Fort Riley with the first Infantry division, I was artillery. A year later received orders for Korea, station a few miles for the DMZ. Thanks for serving.

Hi Edward,
Thanks for the generous review. I'm glad you survived your time in Nam, there were certainly a lot who didn't. The country was certainly going through some unsettling times, and frankly it pissed me off the way so many of the returning soldiers were treated. Folks tend to forget that like the saying goes, freedom isn't free. Thank you for your service as well.

I think you might have misread my message. Though I am a Vietnam vet era, my time was time in Korea. But thanks for your reply. Yeah, it pissed me off to hear friends who served in Nam, with plenty of stories. Thanks for sharing.

I'm enjoying these stories from the Life's Choices writing prompt. You just never know which decision is going to change the trajectory of your life...
It was also interesting to read about the draft. I knew what it was, but never knew how they chose the men they did.
All the best.

Thank you for your review Erika. I believe the draft lasted from 1940, about when the U S got involved in World War II until 1973, at the end of the Vietnam War. There were a number of men who moved to Canada at the time because they didn't want to be drafted. It was an unpopular war, but patriotic feelings were less intense at that time. Thank you again. Blessings.
