This tree grew much faster than I thought it would.

What a fun poem for your picture, Annie. I enjoyed reading it. I like the rhymes and the use of descriptive words. Even though the tree is gone, its remnant still give animals something to enjoy. I could see the kitties sleeping on it.

Best wishes in the contest.
Respectfully, Jan

This was a true story, and a fun poem to write. The tree gave good shade in the summer but became a nuisance. The tree cutters humored me and left me a nice stump and the neighbor's kittens were always naping on it. Probably waiting for the birds to come back. Since then the poor stump has been completely covered with snow as we have had an enormous amount this year. Thanks so much for your kind review. Have a great New Year.

Hello Annie, I enjoyed reading your poem. I almost felt as if you were talking about the ol' maple tree that I once had. I especially liked:

It grew and branches spread with ease
As seasons passed I raked its' leaves

Those branches grew but harmed the roof
We cut it down I have the proof

(Very good. Of this I can relate. I had the tree cut down, and it was expensive. My grandchildren now sit on its stump.)

A fun poem. Silky rhyming. A pleasure to read. As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck. LateBloomer

Annie, I thought that it was a true story bedause it sounded just like mine. Just sharing here ... I took my tree down after Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The eye of the storm hit our township. I prayed for four hours and ask God not to let that tree come thru the center of our home, and I promised that I would remove that tree as soon as financially possible. It was $1,500--ten years ago. Happy New Years and may the snow stay in Washington. Cheers! LateBloomer ~ Margaret

I adored the sentiments here, the memories and your well chosen words Annie. I just have one suggestion for this line, for the sake of meter:

"It now holds seeds for squirrels, birds,"

A fine read.

It is sad when a tree must be cut down, but sometimes it is unavoidable. I had such a walnut tree, cherished and revered - we had walnuts do plentiful I share them with many. However, a horrible storm came and it cracked. Its stump is still there I am told...I miss that tree. You have given us a great story!

' The Maple Tree ' , is an extremely well-written and delightfully descriptive piece. Penned with craft and skill. This talented poet's work was a pleasure to both read and review. Good luck with the contest. Please let me know how you get on?

Yes we had to cut down a rather lustrous Ficus tree, but it broke the water pipe underground, and luckily hadn't damaged the foundations of the house, it provided magnificent shade, but it is no more. Beautifully written in rhyming aabb, and a great post. Well done, good luck and HNY blessings Roy

What a neat story! Funny how you get attached to those trees. We have a huge willow tree (Planted many years before we bought this house) in our back yard that sheds dead limbs all the time and even more when the wind blows-almost always here in Wyoming-and it is a nuisance but we cannot cut it down, just have it trimmed every year.
A good picture to go with; the picture said many words, too.

It ended too soon... great sentiment without being sappy, but somehow for me it begs for another stanza. Which I suppose is a good thing, always leave the reader wanting more.

I really appreciate an honest review and I believe I have one here. Three stars is a below average rating. Can you give me an idea as to what worked and what didn't for you and maybe where I might add another stanza? I would like to give this some tweaking.

Strong rhyme pattern and rhymes including nap and cap, as well as ease and leaves.

Looks like there was more than an ample amount of snow.

Seems stump now serves more than one purpose.
