When you have to make a decision, it would be difficult to decide which you would take. You didn't mention pictures, like albums of pictures, or a safe that kept your important documents. I sure hope you had such a safe.

I have a safe deposit at the bank and the rules said that pictures or people couldn't be one of your five things.
Thanks for the review. I appreciate you!
-
That's why you didn't mention pictures.

This is really a beautiful story! I really enjoyed reading it. You do have some unique treasures in that iron box.
Here are just two of the ones that stood out to me:
"Haven't had much of a father since that picture was taken, but that one in time is mine."
"My box also holds the family diamond. It is about the size of a baseball and has been valued at nearly .30 cents."
Thank you for sharing your great story.

Thank you so much! Contest doesn't matter much when the story comes from the heart! You are appreciated!
Comment from Barbara Peabody Pouliot
I love this, it reminds me of my treasure box except mine is a bit smaller.I stored most of my memories in my mind on VHS. Then they became obsolete and took up too much space. I have converted all the memories in my mind to memory sticks.
It frees up space for new memories to be stored. But I still have a little box of my treasures only valuable to me. Lol. I love how you write with a sense of humor.
Always remember to bring that with you. Keep writing. Keep sharing

Congrats one your new first place.
-
Thank you! It was quite the photo finish! I know it?s just a contest, but it does help a person?s writing esteem. Supports the decision to go public with your work, if that makes sense?

Everything can make sense in this world Depending on what senses you use. We do have 6 senses to choose from. Lol

This was an engaging story.
It is well written and wildly descriptive!
Of all the things that you would take, the treasure chest seems to be the most valuable to you.
The life long memories and life moments are irreplaceable!!
Your have a tremendous amount of items packed in there, quite impressive.
I was in this position a few years ago, as a wildfire was approaching my neighborhood.
We had to evacuate and had little time ti pack the cars.
Family and dog first. After that all I wanted was photo albums and my kids' baby boxes that I made for them.
They are filled with everything of their first year of life.
Front page of the newspaper on the day they were born, hospital band they wore in their ankle, knitted newborn bonnet, just to name a few things.
We have in common treasures that we would never leave behind.
Thanks for sharing.

I can relate to your story. My sentimental items are only worth something to me, similar to how you describe what the items mean to you. This is a well written story that holds the reader's interest. Best wishes for the contest.

Outstanding writing! The reader is immediately drawn to your story and becomes completely involved in your choices of things to save. The ending, of course, makes the piece an absolute winner. I would wish you luck in the contest, but I'm betting you don't need it. This post is a winner. ann

I think because your entry is so detailed and well thought out is maybe because you have faced fire before. It is not just a laundry list of favorite items, but one with deep thought and meaning.
Very well-written.
Good luck the contest.
Best regards,
Mary

This article, Old Iron Box, is a terrific capture of what bwe value in life. All the items which connect us with thew memories which would otherwise fade are truly worth protecting.

Almost everyone that submitted an entry had a story to tell, but of them all yours struck a nerve differently, and therefore you'll get my vote. Well done.
