Wow, this is an interesting conclusion to your dad's story, Mary. You've done a great job of writing it. Thanks for also sharing your research with us. It's interesting to know how the POWs were treated after the war. Makes me afraid about what Russia is doing with their prisoners in the current war.

Thank you Judy, for your review and very kind words.
From hearing the news, Russia is still reading from the same old playbook with prisoners and civilians.
Best wishes and thank you again.

Nice work. Well written.
My father is "writing " with his thought and not on paper. - I don't understand this line. Aren't his 'thoughts' on the V-mail paper?
Best wishes.

As in my first V-mail, Dad is writing to my mother with information or fears, he cannot put on paper. I used the footprint of his original letter to "write" her as he thinks of missing her, the war, and his fears. I did include the original letter again to connect the dots.
    Thank you for the review.

This is a really interesting letter. The soldier writing home seems to have a kind heart and tells a story most people don't know about. There actually were prisoners who just wanted to go home among the losers as well as the winners.

This is such a moving story! I'm so glad that your have preserved your father's story. I particularly appreciate the common humanity that was shared between the American guards and the German POWs. Thanks for sharing. I wish this had been in a Veterans' Day contest. Perfect for this week - to remember all those soldiers and how much they wished to see their families again.

This is a great capture of the kind of letter all family at home would have wanted to receive from their POW loved ones. Lots of historic data helps frame the letter. Well done.

When it comes down to it, those fighting for their country are all the same, men with families, just hoping to survive and go home again. We all pray to the same God to help us, friend and foe alike. It's the leaders who start the wars, and their people who have to fight them. It's sad that the majority of POWs ended up not going home, but as slave labour. It happened on both sides, especially in the Japanese camps. This was a well written account of one man's war, your father's. I'm glad he made it home to your mother and his angels. Warm hugs, my friend. :)) Sandra xx

This work has reached the exceptional level

A fascinating combination of real-life letters from your father during the war and your research on German POWs and POWs from other European countries. A well-written piece of semi-fictional prose. Hope all is well.

Your write is touching Mary and we must always remember that those enemy soldiers and our own soldiers are just the same, they are victims of warring leaders and miss their families just like we do. Your write has a human touch and I enjoyed your delicate words of kindness here, love Dolly x

Thank you for sharing your story. War is an atrocity, and most soldiers go to war, because they are forced to. PS: in some countries, Russians closed even civilians in camps after the second world war. There were plenty of Polish people (civilians, not engaged in any atrocities etc.) who were locked in a camp, because they came from the western part of the country (they were not Germans, but they lived close to Germany)

Thank you Joanna for your review. It appears that Russia is now doing the same in Ukraine. Bad habits never die.

Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely -I don't know who said that .But when you wrote about the POWs being forced to work I felt angry at the injustice of it .Leaders because of their greed for power or money go into war and the innocent soldiers suffer -all in the name of patriotism!
Thank you for posting .My pet hate is war and I feel very sad for the family of those soldiers..

Thank you for your review. I was shocked when I found out that POWs were used for reparations.
