Another very nice job on your continued reporting on outstanding people from Down Under. I doubt if there is another vet that does what Dr. Campbell does.

What an amazing and worthwhile career. Sounds like he'd be such an interesting person to talk to.

Your writing reminded me of something I saw on Twitter about a doctor who took a job in WA and ended up going to different places in the bush to work. It shocked me to learn that some places in the Northern Territories don't even have clean water. I wouldn't have expected that in Australia.

The towns in WA and Northern Territory all have clean drinking water. Travelling east into Arnhem Land, (by four-wheel-drive, and with a permit) one would neeed to take all one's own supply of water. It is remote and isolated with very few settlements or inhabitants, mostly Indigenous people who have their own known water sources. Every where else is okay but there are vast distances between towns, through desert lands (no people, no rivers, no water sources, and extreme heat) and travellers would need to be prepared for breakdowns in the desert. So everyone takes plenty of drinking water. Thank you for reviewing. Always appreciated.

A fascinating read Wendy and I was sad to learn about vets and farmers committing suicide, how awful is that. Because they cared so much, they blamed themselves for problems they were not responsible for. You paid tribute to one of life's great heroes here and I enjoyed your story, love Dolly x x x

Thank you very much Dolly. Yes, their lives are hard, and the last few years we have had many natural disasters one after the other.

Fascinating. I just wonder how he can fly somewhere to spay a dog and make a profit (or break even). And when he flies into the deep outback, where does he get refueled?
Dr. Campbell Costello is indeed an interesting person.
Best wishes.

Many of the cattle stations also have light planes (even for droving) and have aviation fuel on site, with their own little air strip. And the Royal Flying Doctor Service does similar work for humans as does Missionary Aviation Fellowship, so they all keep good supplies of aviation fuel. I don't think he makes a great profit, it all gets put back into his work either here or overseas, but farmers would all feed him and offer accommodation for as long as he is with them - that's just what they do in the outback, and they are glad of the company. So he lives very simply.Thank you for your thoughtful review and questions.

As soon as I saw the picture with the dog and the plane, I thought he must be a traveling veterinarian:-)

I like these essays you're bringing us on extraordinary people. And I hear about many here in the States, but not so much other parts of the world.

The statistic on vets committing suicide is shocking. So I appreciate that information.

A very interesting and empathetic man. Thank you for bringing him to our attention, and the challenges of veterinarians in your country.

Lol. Yes, but he was a veterinarian long before the dog adopted him - but they make an awesome pair and are inseparable (in Australia at least). Yes, I too was shocked about the vet suicide statistics. Their life is not easy and they are greatly overworked, separated from families for long periods, and I am sure the travelling takes its toll too, and when they cannot save animals' lives due to severe injury or snakebite or whatever, they do feel it. Thank you so much for reviewing.

Good morning, Wendy!
I very much enjoyed your exceptionally well-crafted non-fiction offering, and I learned a great deal as well about Dr. Campbell Costello and his passions and service.
I especially smiled as I read the following paragraph:
"He is a dinky-di, true-blue Aussie - genuine, hardworking, a bit of a larrikin. He has a broad accent and a willingness to tough things out when necessary, to show initiative, to get things done, and to live simply."
Love the "dinky-di!"

Just a note in passing : About halfway through your work, the font size changes. (Often happens to me as well.)

Thank you for sharing!

Oh thank you so much for the lovely review and six stars. Greatly valued - it means a lot to me. I am amazed about the font. Last I checked it was fine, so that's a bit annoying, but I'll go straight in and fix it (if I can).

What a coincidence that I heard a radio interview with this man on the ABC just the other day. Now I can put a face to the voice, and learn of the full range of his accomplishments; thank you very much!

Thank you for reviewing! Yes, I also heard it on ABC Conversations, and that was what inspired me to find out more about him and dig a bit deeper. He didn't say much about his work for mental health in the program or his work with the government, but he must be very busy, as I left out a lot of other info as well.

Not bad for a boy from the bush indeed! Your well researched story, put together in a very readable way, was wonderful to immerse myself in.... combining what interests me greatly: animals and adventure. You brought Dr Campbell Costello into bold focus as a heroic, practical figure, seeing issues and dealing with them, both in Australia and internationally. Super inspiring!

The suicide statistic is certainly alarming. Rural life and burnout sure take their toll. (I suffered from burnout 7 years ago and had a head-on collision with a truck. Someone suggested I tried to kill myself and how selfish it was of me to involve a truckie in my death wish, but I am sure I just went to sleep at the wheel. I've never felt suicidal, just overworked.)

Correction:
...from the peninsular in North Queensland...
('peninsular' in this context should be 'peninsula'.)

I've worked on a cattle station (Anna Plains) in the Kimberley region and travelled by motorbike through a lot of the area the vet services: northern Australia - from the peninsula in North Queensland (Cape York Peninsula) through to the Northern Territory (except Arnhem Land), and even further west to the Kimberley region of Western Australia... and Uluru in Central Australia. Wonderful country, but oh so harsh and unforgiving.

You have had an amazing life too! You must have so many stories to tell about your experiences.
Thanks for the spelling pick-up. Pure carelessness on my part and I could kick myself. Thank you for your great words of encouragement and for the super six. That?s very meaningful to me. I fell asleep at the wheel when I was trying to do an overnighter from Mackay to Brisbane once. Wandered into the path of a semi coming the other way. His air horn and flashing lights soon woke me up!! I was shaking for the next half hour. People should not make or voice judgments about others when they really have no idea of what you were experiencing. Grossly unfair. Thanks again for a super review.

Gosh you had a narrow escape too! Mackay to Brisbane is a long haul.
I hit the truck and wrote off my car but not a mark on me.

Wow! Another of your amazing collection of fascinating characters from Australia, a world so far from mine in Britain. This is also another uplifting tale, renewing my faith in humanity once again.
