What an inspiring story for this brief! It reads beautifully in this very compact form and dispels so many images we have of the hatred between enemy sides. My father was actually a prisoner of war for the entire period of WW2 and he too had memories of similar good will and humanity, at times, on the part of the Germans. We often forget how young these men were and how much they must have longed for normality and being home with their families. The only comment I would make in the story is that the first paragraph seems to need to flow into one sentence as, at the moment, the first sentence doesn't have a verb. Good luck in the contest, Kay! This is a strong contender, aptly posted this weekend. Take care Debbie

Hello Debbie, Many thanks for reading and your comments. How dreadful your father sat out the war as a prisoner (most were starved and abused.) He was blessed to return home. K XX

This is very good. I've heard of this Christmas truce before among to two sides. It is too bad things like that don't happen more often in times of war. Both sides are just homesick boys wanting the war to end. You told this well.

Hi Beth, Congrats on your win! Thanks for reading my friend. Pity men today had compassion instead of killing. K xx

What a lovely account of the Christmas 'truce' even though it was only temporary. It's so hard to imagine being an enemy one minute and then a friend and then back to being an enemy!! I guess that's war!!

Hi Wendy, Thanks for reading. War was different and men were too. Pity it isn't the same today. K xx

A virtual six! I have heard this story and am gratified that someone like you wrote it out. I also have heard tht the pilots saluted each other in the skies. This world needs a Christmas Miracle so badly.
i predict this will win the contest!

I like this story. I saw a play based on this Christmas Eve ceasefire a few years ago. What an amazing show of friendship to people who were trying to kill each other a few hours before. They just all wanted to go home to their families but got a respite by sharing the Christmas spirit.
Thanks for sharing this story. It is a great one that shows what is important in life.
