Loved your story and I don't know a thing about hunting but you had me laughing. Of course, the lie was to preserve the few things that Caroline held precious in her eyes and what a great relief that she went to the Lord happy. Congratulations on the win!

Hahaha! Love that ending! And your story had fluency, pace and entertainment, making it an excellent read. I actually thought she was going to leave the dog to you in her will! Well done! Debbie

Thank you for sharing this 'Houston Moth Grand Slam storytelling contest. I enjoyed reading and I am positive that Jesus would have done the same thing in this circumstance.

A delightful story with a strong conclusion. Thankfully, telling a lie is NOT the unforgiveable sin. Still, we should avoid telling one as much as possible. White lies are still lies, but if they keep someone from being emotionally broken, I think it is not something to lose sleep over. After all, the Lord knows our heart and He can certainly tell if any malice was intended.

Hi Lily, yes I think if a lie is told, it better have some righteous justification.

Thanks for reading and reviewing this story. I really appreciate it.

I love this story!!!! The truth of the lie was to be found in the compassionate reason for telling it. I supposed such lies are called 'little white lies'. Personally, I call them messages of love, respect and empathy. Great story and I saw no spag. ann

Hello Ann, yes I hate telling even minor untruths but I guess there are times they are justified. Like when my wife say, "Do I look fat?" I say, "Do I look stupid?"

Thanks so much for reading and reviewing this little story, and thanks for the 6-star review! That made my day.

Oh my goodness, Narvik!
Your story just made my day!
I was "hooked" from the beginning.
Okay.
That might be a little fib.
But I was definitely "hooked" from this paragraph on:
"I look down at this dog and, Geezus Christ. He was flabby, he walked crooked, he drooled constantly, and he always had a goofy look on his face. Despite Caroline's assertions, Chester was not bird dog material."

Loved your characterizations, flow of your story, and just the overall effect it had on me!

Smiles all around!

Thank you for sharing!

Truly funny story! Poor Chester, just like his mistress, he was just being himself! He was barking in the woods because he had that certain joie de vivre.

I saw on your bio that you used to be a sheep rancher. I raised sheep for 30 years. Their intelligence was right about there with Chesters.
When the Bible tells us we are like sheep, it's not a compliment.
Thanks for sharing!

Yes, farm animals provide endless possibilities for stories, as you know. I started writing a book about my sheep ranching days but never finished.

Thanks for reading and reviewing this, Julie.

Ha, ha, ha that was a good ending, and sometimes I really wonder what Jesus will do if it was in our place? Truth can get you so far after all:) Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

What a fun and entertaining story but I'm sure it would have playing on a person with conscience for telling a lie. But I think you'd certainly been forgiven for trying to make someone feel good about an obnoxious dog. LOL. Thanks for sharing. Wish I had a six.

What a lovely story! There is sometimes a dilemma to face between keeping people happy and being truthful. In this case, I think it's pretty clear that you ultimately made the right decision. Thanks for sharing this.
