I thoroughly enjoyed your fun story - and I was totally surprised by the turn it took when she fell. Had to laugh when I saw the contest you are in. An excellent entry, so best wishes!

Come on, that's funny. I don't care who you are. I have worn wigs and am about to get dentures, so it could happen. I usually tell people when I wear a wig because it is for fun. I wear colored contacts sometimes, too. I could be temporarily embarrassed, but not for long. I would be laughing. Karen

But, he should have helped her up first and found her dentures. That guy was wayn too delicate. :-) Karen

way, I was typing way. I don't wear slips. Or dresses. I write fast and make the occasional mistake. Not nice to point them out. You might hurt my delicate feelings. :-)

I thought you did it on purpose since my name is Wayne and you were... anyway

This was a fun read and unfortunately I ve witnessed something almost similar when 51 was actually my mother age. Thank you for sharing and good luck with the contest you got my vote.

Such a sweet story, then Boom! You really got me with this one. Didn't see it coming. Nice job of that, Wayne.

I liked the shy, awkwardness of Valerie as Val patiently attempted to gain her trust. His persistence and thoughtfulness paid off and she soon fell for him. Is there any hope for them now, or will he never be able to get away from that sudden vision of her? Who knows? Fun story. - Jim

Thank you. It was fun writing.
I don't know how they recover. I expect it's up to him to come crawling back - as long as he's okay with a toothless bald-headed woman!

This is an excellent entry to the marriage proposal gone wrong contest. Valerie's physical defects are amusing, and the consequences they have on her speech are hilarious. kay

A very good post by you. An easy read that is nicely paced. It has a good flow.
Excellent dialogue that keeps the story going. Chicken vegetable soup is one of my favorites.
Having two characters with the same name can be confusing.
Thank you!

Thank you. The limited word count kept me from playing on the names.

This was phenomenal! An adorable as well as very realistic love story melted into a display of hilarity in a seamless manner. Bravo! My only note would be when Val is thinking about not wanting to tell Valerie about his hobby as a amateur chef, it came off a little narcissistic and that didn't really gel with his overall character. Maybe there's a way to shift his thoughts on that to something that sounds a little less like the women in his life just never appreciated that he cooked. Thank you for your post, excellent writing!!

    Thank you!
Of course I didn't mean to be mean about him enjoying cooking. One problem in this section was the restriction of word count.
reply by Jacqueline Taggett on 11-Feb-2024
I completely understand!! And it didn?t come off as mean, just a very very slight shift in the characters personality but honestly it was so early in the story anyways I think that how Val acts and speaks resets him as being an absolute sweetheart. This is still a phenomenal piece and I hope you win!!!

Hmm, this one is interesting. I'm not sure about a few things. I know it is wholesome and the preferred FS relationship or dating style but. Then ending was a surprise and perhaps not that awful. I assume Val called her later. Also, odd that four mumbled words would make hastily leave, at that point. He was about to purpose. So, it odd he wouldn't know about the wig and teeth. No kissing, no late-night baths together, no slapping cheeks or morning breath.

This should win.

    Thank you for the catch.
    And for your great review.
Yes, I did aim for the granny vote!
The word count restriction hampered me a bit.

LOL, you really did. But that's smart.

I laughed when she let a stranger drive off in her car, and when Val (simp) bought two new tires, then left the keys in the ignition. I was like..."What city is this, Mayberry?"

Funny stuff, Wayne. They'll love it.
