When we went to Stonehenge in England I thought we were going to be able to go over and touch the stones but no we were roped away by about 80 ft. And in addition to that the whole ordeal was very commercialized I was disillusioned. That reminded me of the cave I went down in an elevator with my students and it was very different than the cave I was describing in my book Traffic. There were no elevators in that cave what should I learned about through watching youTube for an afternoon. Garbage seems to be one of the fallout of commercialized caves.

Talk about bursting a bubble. I empathized with the troop at what was found littered upon the floor. Made me think of the comparison of human creativity and beauty vs. human carelessness and destruction.

A most excellent posting!

Aah, too bad! Their hopes were dashed for being the first to discover this rare find. Some other less considerate folks had been there first and left their evidence all over the place. Typical of slobs with no respect for the beauty and surprise of antiquity who spoil the enjoyment for others.

An unfortunate surprise ending to this beautifully written flash story, John.

LOL, John! The twist at the end was worth the price of admission, had there actually been a charge. I had already thought this was one of the best stories of yours I had read before I got to the end. I truly felt I was entering the caving world with the troop. Outstanding. Terry.

Lol. Well, it seems it was seen by human eyes before and the wall art was probably done by some fast-food-eating graffiti artists. I like how you told the story giving the boy scouts the hope of first-viewing discovery.

"Yeah. Let's do it," shouted the boys. (Suggest an exclamation point than a comma to fit the "shouted".

Exclamation point it is. Thank you for that correction and for reading the post based on the club. It was fun doing some due diligence on caving.

Oooh, this was so interesting and suspenseful throughout the whole read. In fact, about two paragraphs in I was so into it that I started over to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Then you got to the part about the fast food wrappers and half eaten food on the ground and my heart sunk, as I knew for these boys and men it had to be such a let down.

But a cool ending, nonetheless, as it showed that you can always expect the unexpected, even if it isn't what you want to hear or see. Wish I had a six for this one. Awesome!

Thanks John, for this cool story that at first I thought it happened to you and your boys. Awesome way to use this club entry. I am guessing this is Helen's, right?
I read it and my mind went blank because I know so little about fossils.
But great job, little bro. Love, Debi

Well I'm soon to be a fossil so at least you'll know me. Yes, from Helen's Flash Fiction Club. It was fun to write because I had to do some due diligence on caving.
I do appreciate your review, sis!
    Love ya back,

Your twist at the end had me laughing. LOL I enjoyed reading. All my boys did Boy Scouts and benefited greatly from it. I've heard a rumor it's been changed and not for the good.

Joel continued. "Respect the cave and pride yourselves (continued,)

I don't understand people who leave garbage behind, specially in the ocean and caves. Some places are virgine sanctuaries never explore before...sad.

Great entry for the Tampered Fossil club event.

Well, I'd have to guess they weren't the first to look at the wall. It makes me wonder, had your dad taken you down that elusive path, would you have been the first?

Great story, John. Best, JohnC
