Not an Extrovert

I always felt more at ease with one friend at a time.

I'll bet you have a winner with this one. I never belonged to just one group of friends. I had friends of all ages, and preferred to spend time one on one with most of them. I had varied interest and found friends who shared those interests as well. I learned to garden, sew, write, swim, ride horses instead of spending time with gossipers.

Thank you Jeano. I had varied interests too and you talk about different things with different friends. I really appreciate the review. I've read some pretty good personal stories, so I'm not expecting a win but that for the six stars and saying you think it could win.

Great story, Beth. I can really empathize with you on this one because I am very much the same way. You made a great case for being an introvert and telling what it's like to a T. Very well told.

I don't like big groups and would much rather talk to people one-on-one. If I go to a party (rare these days) I tend to seek out one person to talk to and stick with them for a while. Like you, I tend to clam up when with a group.

My wife and kids are pretty much the same way too. But there's nothing wrong with that. It's just the way we are made, and extroverts just don't seem to get it.

So I say, "Introverts of the world, let's not unite! We do better that way."

Thank you Jim. It seems most or the people who have reviewed this claim to be like me. Maybe we all become writers. I've always had better luck getting my thoughts out on paper. My husband was introverted than me. One of my daughters is introverted, one is very extroverted. My twins aren't extreme in either way.

I get a kick out of what I've come to assume as some of your personality traits. Some of which I share. I was always the type to hide away in a corner and just watch in a crowd. But contrary to being bashful or backward as most would think, I usually had a good idea of who could and couldn't be trusted by gatherings end. LOL. I was thinning the crowd for future endeavors. Thanks for sharing.

You played it smart. I wasn't exactly shy, but I'm not sure anyone is totally confident in high school. Some put on a bold act. I didn't mind speaking on stage, but I didn't care of small talk If I hadn't done my homework, I tried to make myself invisible. You were smart to scope out the crowd for future endeavors. LOL

"I've never been particularly fond of group gatherings," and "sit on the side lines" are my preferred sentiments exactly.

"side lines" should be sidelines.

"misfit" is another term I could relate well to, especially at that age.

Being excluded from others never a good feeling.

Suppose that surprise party surprised you big time. Question was how to keep all those teen girls from spilling the beans before they arrived at your home.

Surprises are not always welcomed by the one being surprised.

Most teens believe they know all the answers. Most of the time they do not even know what the questions are. That is where good parents come into the picture with their previous experiences even if they believe different from what the teen does.

Thank you Brett. I'm finding a lot of people seem to understand the way I feel. Actually more men than women aren't fond of groups.
Thank you for an excellent review. I enjoyed you comments.

LOL I enjoyed reading this contest entry. It was a fun read. I'm not big into surprised or large groups myself. I'm a one-to-one type of person. Thank you for sharing this entry with us and good luck with the contest.

Thank you, With a group of highschool girls there is usually more than one conversation going, and most of them or boring or gossip.

I never could make small talk. My wife was the one with the gift of gab, though I did kiss the Blarney Stone. I always felt people didn't like me, particularly a female worker in the sheltered workshop in the Agency where I worked. Then one day, she told me she was leaving and wanted me to take her sister, mentally retarded and disabled, on my caseload as she thought highly of me. Shows you how wrong you can be!

Thank you Jim. We can be wrong ahout people with out thought about them. A weathy girl in my class I thought perhaps felt she was better than me and then she made a speach years later at a class reunion and admitted she was jealous of me because I got the leads in school plays that she wanted.

I would love to have seen you in a play! I always was afraid I'd forget my lines, more than acting in front of people.

I find myself very much like you, Beth in that I am better one on one rather than in large groups. I'm more quiet then loud, more introverted then extroverted and would have reacted like you did.

With that all being said, you've posted a good qualifying entry to the contest.
Best of luck,
John

Thank you John. I've finding most people who have reviewed this say they don't like crowds and perfer communicating one on one. Maybe it has something with fact writers have discovered, as I have, that you can get your thoughts out best on paper in a quieter setting. Crowds are noisy.

I can very much agree with your story. It's such the tone to me that I too live somewhat the same kind of thing in my high school years as you lived however, the reason I live that way was because I was much older because of my duties at home than the kids in school, and they didn't have very much in common with me. So therefore, I just kind of sit on the sidelines. Also I was trying to hide the fact that I was in an abusive situation with my home life.Patricia .

I guess high school kids are more sensitive and feeling their way along unsure how they are seen by others. Thanks for the nice review.

It sounds like some positive outcomes came from that surprise party as well as the negativity of having been surprised which you don't like to have happen to you. I am not sure why you focused on the negative instead of the positive but I would like to suggest that these girls thought of you as one of them and that is a good thing, right? Enjoy the party and accept graciously the gifts.
Setting your mom straight was a good plan but notice that you were worried that they didn't like you and now you know they do.

Thank you Jesse. I should have been more grateful for Mom's effort but I did realize they excepted me as one of them and I was ashamed that I had bad thoughts about them. I really appreciate the review.

You are right our stories have a lot in common. Great minds and all that. My next animal is Franklin the Farting Ferret. I hope that is not what your next story is about! You wrote a good story. I was not a big crowd person either. I had one or two friends at a time too. Karen:-)

Thanks for reading it. I may skip the story about farting in public but I 've done worse that that. LOL
