That is terrible. I don't really know what to say. The discrimination is just appalling. Although I'm half American I grew up and live in Western Europe. We have many problems here but what you describe is not one of them. At least not on the Continent. Ulla:)))

I enjoyed reading your poem. Prejudice is still prevalent in our country and I'm concerned it is only getting worse. Your poem is very descriptive and well written. Great job.

Thanks for sharing the image, notes, and poem, Pam. You wrote an excellent poem that tells a poignant story about those who have and those who do not, and what happens to those who don't. I am surprised that things aren't much different today. That is very sad.
It is unforgivable that a student would go to the principal about the defaced books because he wanted to learn and then be told there were no more books. You make a good point about life not being fair, and it is certainly true for this situation and those like it.
It's no wonder that kids would look to other things and drop out of school. If they are lucky, they could get some kind of job if they were old enough, but it doesn't make up for what they lost by not getting an education, and most importantly, being treated like second class citizens. Compounding it is the adults who run the school and the town and just turn their backs to the real issues affecting students and their families.
You have an excellent conclusion to an excellent poem. Thank you for sharing it.

Hi Pam,
This is a sad story of discrimination during the sixties it seems. It shows how mean kids can be.
But, as you say in your notes, even though integrated schools aren't equal now.
It is now more base on rich or poor now. Everyone deserves the same good education.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Have a great day

That is a poignant narrative poem of racism and inequity in a system, proactively designed to keep some people perpetually disadvantaged. Unfortunately, man is as safe as his neighbourhood, as the failures of such system would be the burden of the whole society, hunting both the victims and the proponents of the system. Well done, dear PAMUSART for sharing your story. I did enjoy reading it.

Hi Barry. Did you mean to give me a rating of four stars?
Thank you for your wonderful review

No. It was meant to be five. My slip up and I will go in and put in five. My apologies. Take care.

That was terrible! It just goes to show how racist the country was, and still is. Black children weren't given a chance, yet saying that, many went on to be doctors, teachers, lawyers, judges, and a President, all because they wouldn't sit down and take it. It still doesn't mean it is right for white people to be racist. Those people are the no brainers! Racism should have been wiped out by now, yet it still goes on. Well done, Pam, and I'm sorry that happened to your husband.

You're right that the school system is not equal and financially dependent on the property taxes. So the richer neighborhoods have better schools and education. Wish there would be a better way to ensure a good balance.

Comment from Gloria ....
Yes there was a time that students would deface textbooks. This is an excellent poem illustrating that many things are not "fair" including schools and that kind of discrimination is demotivating if no one is there to help the discriminated against.
Much enjoyed Pam and many thanks for sharing. :)

I was hoping this wasn't a true story but unfortunately that's not the case. Racism is not something I can understand as it makes no logical sense to me. Why judge based on something a person can't control when you can judge everything else they have control over? Anyways, thank you for raising awareness with your writing.
