Every spouse and parent has nightmares when one is serving this great country. This is an emotional piece, and I found myself lost in tears. Thank you for sharing.
God bless,

This was so touching and more than most, worthy of a win. Thank you so much for memorializing those who gave their lives for this once great country and the families that bear the brunt of their sacrifice. With their backing and strong leadership, this country can remain number one in the world.

I hate to sazy it, but I could not stand it if KH were the commander in chief of our troop.

I'm with you on that one, Jim.

Paul,
Congratulations on your first-place win!
What's so unique about your poem is that it could pertain to a soldier in one of the many wars in which we fought for our rights, and the rights of some foreign power.

Exceptional poem.
Best wishes,
Cindy

This sad poem, Dog Tags, presented with nine ABAB-rhymed quatrains, takes the readers to a painful moment when the realities of war and being a soldier come to the worst moment. What a moment that separates forever a couple's chances.

This poem was awesome. As I read, I put myself in her place. I could feel her pain, her anger and frustration that war had taken one of the good ones. A child will never know his father, there will be no more them. It is now just her. This was a powerful poem about grief and loss. Good luck to you in this contest. Gretchen

Thanks, Gretchen. It's hard for us men to realize the plight of women who stay home while their men are at war.

This is such a touching post. I remember many of my friend's wives getting these letters. I've had to comfort many, feeling very guilty that I survived and they didn't. War is truly Hell. It dramatically alters people's lives in a heartbeat. It's so sad...

This is a beautiful entry for the sad poems writing prompt competition. It is heartbreaking that so many young families will lose their loved ones, many children growing up never knowing their father. The repetition of the phrase "but not tonight" brings a powerful emphasis to your words, the rhythm and rhyme are perfect. Thank you for sharing this poem. Well done!

Wow. If this isn't six star worthy, nothing is.

You told us a complete story from one point in time and going into the future.

Perfect cadence and rhyme. This has my vote.
Sad story but filled with truth and emotion.
