I enjoyed reading your story. It was very interesting. I don't like spiders either. But I'm afraid of snakes. I saw 4 in my yard last year.
Your story was very descriptive. Great job.

    Hello Brenda,
When I was living in Key West I never saw any snakes, and there are none in Alaska where I live now, but Charleston had an abundance of them. Several times Cottonmouth Water Moccasins gave me a scare when I was out fishing. Once one came up hanging on to a fish basket that I had hanging off my boat that had a half dozen or so bream in it. I dropped that basket like a rock and picked up my paddle so I could whack it, but it wisely left, thank God!
Thanks for the wonderful review gal.
    Have a blessed evening.

We were living in SC, stationed at Fort Jackson from 2001 - 2004 and had Illinois plates on our car. The citizens in that area were still fighting the Civil War. It wasn't great. Thank for sharing this story with us. I enjoyed reading and the killing of the spider.

mile or more.I found a good stretch of trees (space needed after the period)

    Hi Barbara,
yes, we had Ohio plates. I imagine the folks in Charleston probably saw plates from all over the country, with the naval base right there, but it was nonetheless intimidating for awhile. Thanks for sharing that tidbit gal, and for catching the error.
    Have a blessed evening.

I love this story, Tom, but I also love spiders which, after all, also eat bugs just like lizards. And I was really praying that you were going to say that the spider walked free from the smoking carnage! Now wouldn't that have been a great ending? It could have been like one of those hillbillies stalking you for the rest of the day:)) Sorry. As ever, your story reads engagingly, packed full of character and humour. Thanks for sharing. Debbie

    Hello Debbie,
I'm glad that spiders eat bugs, and Lord knows they were falling down on the job down there, because the fire ants used to plague me whenever I left my crickets which I used for fishing, on the back porch. I wish I'd had an ant eater as a pet back then. He would have been fat and sassy. Thanks so much for the entertaining review gal. Have a blessed evening.

I don't pay much attention to snakes and spiders and such, but I'd darn sure be afraid the grizzlies, and I've heard moose can be aggressive too. But I'm guess, like most things, that's probably exaggerated by most. I love the way you deliver a story. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Ric,
you're a braver man than me buddy. Just a few weeks ago a fellow was hunting with his dad, who happened to have been a fish and wildlife trooper for thirty years. They were separated by a few hundred yards, and though his dad was in front, the son, who was an adult, got attacked by a grizzly. The guy was wearing a pistol in a holster on his chest, and with the bear on top of him chewing on him, he had a hard time reaching it. He ended up shooting himself in the leg twice, while emptying the pistol in the bear. His dad came and finished off the bear with his rifle. Not long before that a little girl was attacked by a moose. They can be really aggressive, and they are exceptionally stupid. So far five have been killed on the Glenn Highway going in to Anchorage from Wasilla just since July. They walk right out in front of a car without slowing down. Some folks believe moose are more dangerous than bears, and I kind of believe that too. Thanks for the great review my friend.
    Have a blessed evening.

A spider big enough to make noise is a spider to be avoided.... I salute you for shooting it and admit that I would have been gone from that woods quicker than a flash flood. No spiders for me either. Well told!

    Hello Carol,
once I had dispatched the spider, I felt pretty safe sitting there in the woods waiting for the squirrels to come out. There was no shortage of bugs and snakes down there in Charleston, but the fish got pretty big too, so I guess we have to take the good with the bad. Thanks so much for the delightful review gal.
    Have a blessed evening.

My daughter is literally an arachnophobe, she certainly would agree, my opinion of spiders changed quite dramatically when I found out they are the main reason we are not overrun by bugs, to the point of 80% ot the world's pests, but nevertheless, they are ugly 'buggers' well done Tom. Hello Roy,
thanks so much for the exceptional review and the six, I truly appreciate it. I imagine they do eat a lot of bugs. I guess the one I killed was especially skilled at hunting, judging by his size. I didn't stop to weigh the benefits of a living spider versus a dead one though, I just shot it. Have a blessed day my friend.

Isn't the ending line herein what Forest Gump often said in interviews?
the missus and I viewed Reagan yesterday. What a wonderful movie, once I got past seeing that Dennis Quaid looked more like Nixon than Ronnie. Go view it.

    Hi Tom,
you're quite right, I think the quote was," and that's all I have to say about that." I want to see the movie. I'm not sure if it's on at our local theatre yet. I'll check and see if it's there next Tuesday. The theatre offers $5.00 Tuesdays all day long. A real bargain.
Thanks for the great review. Have a blessed evening.

That was a mighty powerful weapon to take down a spider, no matter how big it was! Did the sound chase away all the squirrels as well? Or did they come to see what the gunfire was all about? Lol. Very well recounted, I can see it all. Now if you want to meet some spiders of various sizes, come and visit Australia. We accept most of them as having a place in nature, but we know which ones to be very wary of. ell told.

    Hello Wendy,
I would love to come to Australia, but I have heard so much about the dangerous animals and bugs there that I don't know that I'd have a minute's peace the whole time I visited. I don't know how you keep from coming in contact with all the poisonous things on the continent. I'd love to see a Koala though. Perhaps I'll just go to the zoo. Thanks so much for the delightful review gal.
    Have a blessed day.

This was a very funny story. Your description of your perception of the South was hilarious. Equating this description with the movie, 'Deliverance' was genius. It was interesting to imagine a big old military man being afraid of the South. Your pacing got a little fuzzy when you broke away from your narrative to describe your financial situation. It was necessary but it broke your pacing. When you return to the narrative, your pacing is restored especially when you get to the spider's entrance. I love your ending. It sounds very southern, "a man has to do what a man has to do, and that's all I'm going to say about that". Brilliant. Is that an Ohio colloquialism?

    Hello AliMom,
thanks so much for the delightful and informative review. I agree with you about describing the financial situation, it did kind of break up the story a bit. I don't know where I picked up part of the saying, but I believe the part about-that's all I'm going to say about that is a take off of Forrest Gump. Thanks so much for taking the time to read and review this work gal.
    Have a blessed evening.

After watching Deliverance I didn't want anything to do with small rivers or canoes for a long time. I certainly respect your uncomfortable feelings about venturing into the woods in the South as well. I also totally agree with what you did to that spider if it could make itself heard just coming across the ground.

    Hello Carol,
yes, I could hear it actually crunching those dry brittle oak leaves. It was really creepy and it freaked me out. I know how I am, I'm easily distracted, and I didn't want to be watching for a squirrel and forget about that big spider. It was better to dispatch it so I could concentrate on the business at hand. Thanks so much for the great review gal.
    Have a blessed evening.
