Wow. This was one of those stories that makes you choke back the question "would I do as he did or would I make a difference". Of course, I'd like to think so, but I've been witness to things before and stayed quiet. This was a phenomenal story. Thank you for sharing. I wish I still had a six but I don't. Good luck in the contest. Gretchen

This is a good story. It makes the reader think about the effects of war on all involved and the personal challenges the characters faced, knowing the end result facing the riders. I

An excellent entry for the War writing prompt. A very realistic depiction of what it must have been like to drive one of those extermination trains. i cannot imagine the inner turmoil many of those people must have had after realizing exactly what their job entailed. The ultimate in human tragedy.

Oh wow, this is absolutely chilling and tells this horror story in a most dramatic and effective way. It defies belief the evil that went on during that period: those poor innocent children and the adults crammed in and sweating, probably only too aware of their ultimate fate. Thank you so much for keeping these people in our memories. They need to be remembered for all our sake. I wondered if it might be better to say: half-(formed) plans (to prevent repetition).
Also: We charged them for four hundred (could this be clarified?)
An excellent and strong contender. Good luck! Debbie

I did a tiny bit of research and discovered that was the price and sometimes they cheated a little.

This is an outstanding account of one man's contribution to the final solution. There were so many who took part without really being pro the situation. There could have been so many more saved if there had been more brave people determined to help. rather than help injustice. kay

You describe this so very well, but the person who drove those trains doesn't have my sympathy. Although they all said they didn't know what was going on, they all knew. Just another coward driving that final journey for millions.
It's well written, and good luck in the contest.

There was a nine hour, forty five minute documentary on the holocaust. Some engineers talked frankly about the trains and their job.

An excellent story about the horrors of the Holocaust. The story is well written and descriptive. To this day, I don't know why the German didn't protest more against what was happening to the Jews.

If you get chance, listen to Chaplin's monologue at the end of "The Great Dictator". I posted it at the end of "Waist Deep In Summer.' Some men have consciences and some are machine men with machine hertws.

What I found interesting about this piece was that you told the story from the train engineer's point of view, as he drives the Jewish children to the death camp. You paint a picture of him as wracked by guilt, struggling to break both them and him out of the horrible end of the line, but unable to take that last leap into the side line that will end the misery. I thought the ending interesting too, as you paint this picture of an allied soldier about to take revenge on the German soldiers, and then not knowing what to do. It is a story of struggling with justice and revenge and mercy and compassion. estory

All I can say is if this true then you had a sad job but knowing the SS and their cruelty not much you could have done. I was in Germany 11 years after the war. i know the score. Best to you in the contest.

The saddest and most frightening thing about this very well written tales is that it could very well happen here in the United States if certain people are given the same kind of power that Hitler was given. Oh there are many who believe that they would fight to prevent it, but there are many who in the end would not risk the live of their loved ones to save some who did not have very much in common with them.
