A funny way to perceive rainfall, rather than a burst of fragrance: denoting a stink released instead by nature. I never encountered this aspect after raining: hope I never do. This view is given all in my viewpoint.

Actually, the smell of worth is my favorite smell in the whole world. It only happened as the rain is starting and the loose soil is just getting damp. If you missed that, I'm sorry. You must be mixing it with the smell of dirty water that has stood in a drainage ditch and soured.

You brought that dank damp smell to my senses here Beth as the moisture soaks into the earth and rather stagnates. At least it is better than an arid dry atmosphere. A fine Haiku that touched my senses here, love Dolly x

Thank you, Dolly. I know you get a lot of rain where you are, but it has been dry here until today. We're finally getting the much-needed rain.

I always look for connections in Haikus. Here, the words "soaked" "permeates" and "dispelling drought" all bring the same meaning to what is going on here.
Nice presentation, as always, Beth. Good luck in the contest.

I like the "dispelling the drought." I remember the one poet here who used to record his own voice reading his poetry. He loved the word "petrichor" to describe that smell of dry earth after a rain. Best wishes in the contest!

Thank you, Hellen. I think our drought which has been going since spring, might have broken today. We are finally getting rain.

Glad you can see the rain as an answer to prayer! We have it all the time so it's hard to be thankful sometimes.

A lovely Haiku with a work of art to complement your poem. The smell of rain after a drought is like perfume. I know because we live in Southern California and experience droughts often.

Thank you, for the nice review. We had a drought in Chattanooga all summer until now but today it is raining.

This 5-7-5, Nature's Gift, has the proper formatting and seems to say that the watery ground is providing the people the atmosphere of moisture that the skies have forgotten.

An excellent Haiku for the contest. Yes, any droughts in certain areas of the US are certainly free from drought right now. I like that we usually hear "dispelling doubt" but here it is "dispelling drought". Best wishes for your entry.

Well this will be very relatable to many. I like the way your haiku has that additional layer of musty scent to add to the atmosphere. I always get the impression from your prose that you're quite an expert on extreme weather events so I take your word on this one. Well done and good luck, Beth! Debbie
