Carol,
What an awesome story this is. I have a feeling that he's dead and it's just a dream or something. Those two officers didn't show up just because. She should have answered the door and then she would know for sure.
Well done my beautiful friend

Thanks so much for your kindness. I apologize for being so far behind. It's a vicious cycle and I can't get caught up. Appreciate your time and thoughts.

This is such a lovely story of story of what seemed to be sadness turned out to be a story of gladness and happiness for this young woman and her new baby that was to be born soon. I enjoyed the story very much you kept me engaged the whole way through. Patricia

Yes, Ken, was home. Jessica, was happy. But poor Mrs. O'Reilly's husband, Tim, was gone. One made it home safely to his family, the other family's husband and dad is gone. Thanks for sharing.

That's the sad part of life...We send people off to war and often they don't come back. Heartbreaking! So young and their lives are over. Thanks for the review.

I love the story of the wonderful reunion... of course I do!
I am befuddled as to why the "Notification Officers" would have ever come to her door!
They have very specific protocol...
I think the "fear" of seeing them at her neighbor's home would have been enough...
Otherwise, the possibility lingers that Ken is a ghost.

I was trying to have them ask her to check in on her neighbor because she had no family in the area and was new to the neighborhood. And of course, I wanted to scare the reader. LOL

Scaring the reader? Check! You did that! You're the author...you've got the wheel, and I defer always to your judgement!

I am so happy this story had a happy ending. You had me worried for a few moments. Thank you for sharing.
He smiled, his voice thick with emotion. "It's me, Jess. I promised I'd come home for Christmas." (emotion,)

Fixed...thank you
I couldn't write a Christmas story with an unhappy ending.... That would make me the Grinch.
Thanks so much for the review.

I enjoyed this, Carol.
But
Why did the officers knock on her door, that was a cruel bit of suspense to put me through woman.
Or is he a ghost?
You minx, you would do that to me. I know you would.

They were actually going to ask if she would check in on Mrs. O'Reily because she was new in the neighborhood and had no family near her. No ghost ...in this one anyhow. LOl

Your story is so emotional. I felt every word of it. The way you built up the tension with Jessica waiting for news and then the unexpected relief when the officers weren't for her -- it kept me on edge the whole time. The ending was beautiful -- I could almost feel the warmth of their reunion. It was so touching, and I just loved the hopeful feeling it left me with. Great work!

Thanks so much, Michael. I read a story earlier that touched me about missing family, and this is what my mind made from it. So many have had that knock at the door, and so many others have waited, dreading that it might come. I am happy our soldier made it home safely.

That was so lovely, Carol! But why did the soldiers knock on her door? Has he gone AWOL? Never mind if he has, he is home with his pregnant wife for Christmas. I could imagine the grief of the lady across the road, so many heard that knock, it was the one thing they dreaded most. Well done, my friend, I really enjoyed this one. :)) Sandra XXXX Love and hugs!

I was thinking (a dangerous thing for me) that they were going to ask Jessica to speak with her neighbor because she was alone in a new neighborhood. I didn't know quite how to say it without taking the tension that I was building out of the story. Hope it played out okay. Thanks for the comments as always.
Love ya, Carol
