Excellent advice for writers based on a real life experience. The saddest part it that the excitement and confidence was lost on being betrayed by a friend.
Best wishes

Thank you, who better than someone close enough to gain your confidence and encourage you to open up and fully disclose your ideas.

That's awful! The problem is, as much as you think you can trust someone, especially a friend, then when that falls apart it take a long time to trust anyone again. That you based this story on something that happened to you, is even more despicable. I'm sure to stopped sharing ideas with him again. Well done, my friend, this was a lesson to all who read it. Warmest hugs, Sandra xx

I am thoroughly convince that our paths will never cross again, and if they do, I will turn and go in another direction.

Hi Nomi,

I realize some people fear others stealing their story ideas, and since you personally experienced this, it can be a real problem. Yet, I am attending SNHU for my master's in creative writing, and we workshop our classmates' writing. We could steal their ideas, but getting feedback from other writers (like on Fanstory) is invaluable and will make us better writers. Even if someone steals your ideas, only your voice and style can tell your story.

Keep writing!

Patricia

I agree, plus with most writers, even the finished product is subject to change.

Sometimes from the goodness of your heart, disappointment comes as what you shared in confidence is not so secretly hidden anymore. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

I have seen movies with similar scenarios and the common denominator is that their talent is in stealing others creativity and not being able to come up with one themselves. I hope you do get to do something with tour story, nomi, if that is what you want.
Cheers

Couldn't you change it enough, maybe even the ending, making it different, maybe even making it better, and submitting it as new because it would be new?
That is terrible when someone steals someone else's idea. A good story, though;

Thank you. I have grown so much from the writer I was then, thanks in large part to FanStory. It would be a totally different story today anyway.

This well written story provides excellent advice for writers and anyone else who has a plan or idea. I once shared with a friend that I had applied for a promotion within the company we both worked for. Though unqualified, she couldn't wait to apply for the same job. Neither one of us got it, but I learned to keep my mouth shut about plans.

This is great advice for creative types in any field.

Amen. We sometimes create competition by inadvertently disclosing thoughts we would be better served to keep quiet about.

HI Nolan,
Your well written story harbors some very wise advise for writers, or even artists of any type. Be careful to guard and copyright everything you create. My father had a friend who wrote Blue Suede Shoes, and had it stolen and sold to Elvis' agent. Like the man in your story, he could only watch as his creation went famous, and without its Creator getting a single penny from it.

Thanks for sharing your story and warning,
Rhonda

It happens all the time. My mother in law wrote lyrics to a catch R&B song that she disclosed to some friends of my wife, they recorded the song, it became a hit and my mother in law received nada, not even a thank you.

Oh my gosh, that's terrible!!! Another good reason for writing the piece you did!

This story reminds me of when I shared my idea of a talking mouse with a friend. My idea was to make it an antihero who led a revolt against the forces of good. My friend, however, decided to create a theme park and make billions with the mouse as a good guy, with a duck and dog friend. People!!

What I would find even more fascinating of how you traveled back in time to the time before this all took place. While you are at it, please tell what kind of person old Walt really was.

Thanks for considering that I have the power of time travel.

A valuable life lesson ably shared.
I think the risk of having our work stolen is a fear many of us share, I guess part of the beauty of the modern world is that everything is now time-stamped and logged in a file if it is written on a computer as many of us do. This provides valuable proof of the story's origin, should, God forbid, it ever become necessary.

That is certainly a reassuring thought. There is so much dishonesty that occurs in the creative community, perpetrated by the untalented greedy people in positions of power who prey upon creative folk who just want to share their creations.
