Prior to her passing, my wife wanted a dog.We adopted one shortly after birth and as my wife was not doing well, I slept with the dog in a cage nd tught her everything I knew. I soon learned she hated the case. It was a sad day when we had to hnd her over to another, but neither of us were in any shape to keep her. I recently had a visit from her and she remembered me well and offered me kisses.

    With Bud's passing I thought to replace but my frailities are becoming aggravated and my bride is sayig she didn't want to be responsible to walk the pet in winter, so she was right once more.

    Thank you. It was a rough moment in time, and a warm reflection of a friend departed.

Solid pet story. Pets become of part of their owners, even without eating them, as one might do with a pet pig. I had a dog that was so distraught over being adopted by a family of boys that it managed to literally hang itself after three days. We tried again a couple years later, and gave that one away when my brothers developed allergies.

If you could think of one or two little anecdotes, perhaps funny or nostalgic ones, to add between your two final paragraphs, it would help complete the transfer of emotion to the reader. Varying the paragraph lengths a little might also help. Eg "Buddy ruled the roost. I learned to be a good pet." could be its own paragraph.

Two very minor typos:

I feltlike a postman <= missing space

Marley went outside and lay quietly, indicating its life was at an end <= you've used "his" up to this point so unless he was upset about a previously unmentioned gender change operation, why not continue?

And one styling/clarity spot:

That lasted a week or so when she gave in <= in place of "when", I would suggest: "after which", or "until". Alternately, add a FOR (that lasted for a week or so). English is weird.

Thanks for sharing. Maybe it's the single-minded devotion of a dog to its pets that makes it to hard to say goodbye.

    Good points. I had his and changed for whatever reason. I'll edit. I also had two short stories, but felt if I went with them, I would continue ad infinitum. I'll consider. Thanks.

Tom, this is a fantastic story with, as always with our fury friends, a heartbreaking end.
It is the thing we accept as the cost of the years of joy and love they provide us, that one day, they will leave and we will go on.
I also agree about being the true pet. I am totally owned by my 3 German Shepherds and I am lucky enough that my cats allow me to grace their presence by being in the room with them.

    Yep, regardless of dogs thinking they are in charge, cats have permitted them to believe so. All one needs to do is see how they strut about without fear.

Your story, your emotions wrapped around me as I read it and of course, brought tears to my eyes as I too remembered losing the loves of my life. Our fur babies own us and we don't care. They give a pure love that nothing compares to. You did a marvelous job with your memory. thank you for sharing.

I really loved the warmth in your story. The way you shared the bond between you and Buddy made me smile. Especially how he "ruled the roost"! Your storytelling felt so real - it was easy to picture every moment with Buddy. It's a beautiful tribute to a special friend. Thanks for sharing this!
