This was an excellent story. I used to think squirrels were cute. But then we don't have squirrels here anyway and I would not have known. Loved the following...common sense took a vacation. No spags.

Lol. I'm glad you knew enough of the squirrel language to figure out what he was saying without translating literally for us. Have you read Country Ranch Writer? She has a profile picture with a squirrel so she has had pet squirrels. I think it must vary from place to place. Some could be much more congenial than the ones you had dealings with! Thanks for the entertaining post!

This is a great story about the trials and tribulations of squirrels, Beth. I think the term, going squirrelly probably from the way squirrels so quickly freak when they find their curiosity has taken them within the confines of a house. Well written.

Yes after trying to live in the house with a baby one for a little while I learned the meaning of squirrelly. You never knew which way he was going to move. Thanks for reading my story. I'm glad you like it.

You are funny squirrel and me bear cubs. This was my dream pet, but I stick with cats for now and dogs are out of discussion because it's hard to keep them prisoner in an apartment.

Thanks for the review and comments. Bear cubs are cute. I read where a family bought was a cute black dog. When he got bigger he stated walking on his hind feet and they found out he was a bear.

You really do have an exciting history with animals, Beth! Maybe you should have been a veterinarian, but as you pointed out, when you were growing up, vets were for farm animals, not pets. This was an amazing story, with some hilarious moments. Thanks for sharing it with us, apparently for the second time. You really are a softy with our furry friends.

Thank you, Mary Kay. I especially appreciate this review because you have the honor of giving me my 26th review, which pushes this to the All Time Best status. That was what I hoped to get by reposting it.
Smiles.

Yippee! I am very happy to know that. Sometimes, I am aware of it, when someone is hovering around the 26th review mark, but this time, it was just a nice surprise. You're very welcome, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer animal lover! God bless you, your family and your pets. Love, Mary Kay xoxo

Hello Beth
While I was read you true story about the pet squirrels; I had to smile. It remained me of the time when a squirrel got into our fire place.
But your story topped my story. Thank you for your humor, which I need when I read-- when the squirrels got their tails painted one with red and one yellow.
Thank you for sharing your humor story

Thank you Gert, I'm glad you liked my story and you got a laugh out of my painted squirrel tales. I wonder what the people at the nature part that we they started seeing squirrels with painted tales running around.

Granted, squirrels are cute, from a distance, but only from a distance. They are intriguing in that they are always so busy, scampering here and there and never stopping. I'm not too sure what place they hold in the scheme of things. I can understand your early fantasies.

Thank you Ralf. I really appreciate the review and comments about this piece. I'm not longer a fan of squirrels. I guess they have a purpose but I'm not sure what.

Delightful tale--rich in your trademark wry wit. Whimsical title for the theme--wickedly clever dark humor as regards the passing thought of the shotgun.

Thank you. I'm delighted that you think I have wry wit. Any kind of wit works for me as long as isn't halfwit.

We had a few in our neighborhood where I grew up but they weren't destructive or greedy. Dad had beautiful gardens and they didn't bother it. They used to eat out of my little three year old daughters hand in my parents yard. She always has a way with animals. Good story, Beth. They are cute, but you should see our tiny Chip-monks here in Nevada. Now they are cute! LOL Nancy:)

Thank you Nancy, We have the chipmonks here to and theyl are much cuter than squirrels, but the ones around her a reallyafraid of people and won't stay out long enough to get a good look. Chipmonks in your part of the world may be braver. I've seen them in Colorado and South Dekota that didn't run away. One jumped in a girls lap when were were visiting and sacred her. She jumped up and screamed.

Well, squirrels are cute when they are babies, I agree, Beth. You did a great job telling of your squirrel encounters. I enjoyed reading your fun story. I know you tried in every way to possible to be friends with squirrels. However in the end, they are wild animals. But they gave you some good ammo for your well written story.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan
