The two previous paragraphs got me to thinking but this one sealed the deal for Sam being a scarecrow.
"I let him pull me against him and I drew in the earthy smell of him. His eyes danced with anticipation as he bent to kiss me. I ran my fingers through his hair, feeling the bits of straw and debris that were tangled in it."
I liked this story. It was creative and very well written. Thank you for sharing it.

Heh heh Jenny married the scarecrow, and all that was his became here's, and she became queen of his fields, and they were hung on a pole together, beautifully written, I liked it anyway, well done, blessings Roy
Typo : I seemed to (be) riding my bike.

Sam was a scarecrow, apparently. I don't how a girl ended becoming a scarecrow too, but apparently that can happen if you let one of them kiss you. I guess you get children the same way. You have quite an imagination. I love the twist at the end.

You are gifted! This has a perfect lead-up to what the reader would never expect. It had mystery and a touch of drama as well.
I know I've said this before, but you never disappoint me. I loved it, Gretchen! Best, JohnC

Oh brilliant as ever, Gretchen! How do you think of them? The straw in his hair as they kissed was hilarious but I had no idea where this was going. So you surprised me again! There's a small edit in your last line - 'lots' without an apostrophe. Great story, well expressed with excellent and natural dialogue. Well done! Debbie

Lol. You naughty thing, tricking me like that!!!
I wanted a proper romance, not a couple of scarecrows. Wendy
Typo: peddling away (pedalling)
I seemed to riding my bike down there: add "be"

This was great! I think it definitely does fall into the horror category. It starts off frightening, then somewhat creepily and unexpectedly turns into a romance, then switches back to creepy when you least expect it! I dig it big time. Thank you for reviving this gem!

Ok- I should have krnown better than to fall for this lovely romantic story! What was l thinking of after I just wrote you a poem that told all about how write your stories But I was enjoying it so much and then all of a sudden, I heard that straw was coming out of his skin. I Went ', ewe,. Then l started to get, used to a Love Story of Scarecrows when I heard about them wanting children. But the last part was tooooooo much! When you write thankfully we live next to a schoolhouse I cracked up laughing and at that moment you got my most special six that I save for a masterpiece towards the end of every week. Omgosh that was hilarious!
Thank you for this awesome revival post!

I'm afraid of scarecrows. No idea why, but this was uncomfortable to write about. Lol. Scarecrows and zombies. Yuk. Thanks so much for this. Gretchen

Oh yes it was. At first, I thought you were going to tell me he was really a dog. Then, I was unsure what was going on, but that was not the scary part, The scary part is you have stuck it in my head that they will have children. Children of the Corn Volume 5!
Do me a favor and read my poor little story "5 cents a glass" Karen
