How very true this is. It is good they have you to help them. It is so sad that there are so many poor, homeless and unloved children suffering and yes, likely to be sacrificial.

Phoenix is working on a program to get homeless shelter and the services they need. So far, it sounds quite successful. A glimmer of hope, maybe.

It took me a minute to get the nativity lamb--good one. Hope your Christmas is merry~Debbie

Very good subject just in the right time to posts. I love your humanitarian question. Your well written story reminds us of the poverty in this unfair World of ours. Here in Venezuela the situation is even worse...
BRAVO Barbara! GREAT JOB!!

That could have been more harsh, but you held back I sense.

In an unnecessary way, the USA is planning its own genocide in the form of starving its own people to death. Why this is is beyond me.

If I say this because of one piece of paranoia-like news, then I am a crazy one. But when I continue to read similar things like this popping up from most of the 50 contigious states (who are hunkering down to be self-reliant, I hope) then I am spot on and I hate that.

My prayers for this year are that each state drums up incredible support for itself and its people, regardless of political or religious view.

What's coming is insidious, it can be lessened by people who notice it and plan accordingly versus hiding and hoping it doesn't happen.

Blessings to you and your efforts.

Very moving, and upsetting, piece. Where do you teach? Where are the children THAT poor? I'm assuming it's an inner-city environment, or perhaps Appalachia. And where are their parents??? This is so tragic. Thank goodness you are their teacher, so that they get SOMETHING, at least, from your generosity. What happens to them next year...and the year after that? I THOUGHT our tax dollars paid for welfare checks to such families. No excuse for them not to have food with the amount of families on government assistance these days!

I have been pondering on this issue from time to time since I can't remember when. Why indeed? Even the so-called "rich and powerful" country is not spared this blight.

Your final line "...I fear many of them will become sacrificial..." set me in deep thought. Will they become the cheap labor of greedy employers or the guinea pigs for experimentation? Irresponsible parenthood are also to blame. The produce children hoping that the state will provide what they cannot. I am of two minds to call you blessed for doing what you are doing for these unfortunates.
But one less of your kind would affect how many of these kids?

We might be groping for answers for sometime. But thanks to all the kindhearted folks like you.

The world is changing and not for the better; children have become the general punching bags for alcoholic and drug taking parents. I was dumbfounded to learn that Canada has banned the Nativity scenes! Parents or not, we have a duty to raise or care for children and teach them the way of love. God first loved us - He must be so sad to see how children all over the world are today. In Australia, we have petrol sniffing five year olds, their mothers so drunk they can't stand up (aborigines.) From what we see of the US on TV (present company excluded) it is a greedy, must have society full of self importance and lacking discipline (gun laws) how many children have to die before the guns are banned? Australians don't need guns - why do US citizens? Blunt I am - sick to death of the filthy rich and the filthy poor without help or hope. Bless you for your work and Happy Christmas.

You are so right, Christmas is not about the material unless in is given in the name of Jesus. My husband and I great day Sunday. Instead of giving to each other. we prayed and asked God who He wanted us to bless and we went passing out gifts to those in need or hurting in some way. Now we can just celebrate God's love on Christmas.

I know you will reach those children in a special way this year. Give them the gift of love! Merry Christmas, LaVonne

Thank you for this urgent reflection expressed from personal experience and conviction. Perhaps rather than "small" the word "humble" would be better to describe the infant Christ. Also maybe the second to last paragraph needs a specific reference to a child who seems particularly lost this year.

Barbara,

Your questions are the same ones that baffle many of us. I think there are several key reasons. One, the lack of responsibility for ones actions is at the front in my mind. Two, the breakdown of the family unit is another major cause of the decline in our civilization. Three, poverty plays a significant role. Lose of a job in an environment such as this can bring about a drastic decrease in family income. Parents who find the welfare roles, food stamps, free cell phones, and the other government give aways provide an incentive for many not to work. If there are children in the home, they will probably suffer. There are more, but I will stop my rant.

Have a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and thanks for reminding me how fortunate my children and grandchildren have been.

Curtis
