Walk a mile in my shoes, the one you abuse and accuse, walk a mile in my shoes. No one can really do that. But the sentiment is right on. Michael Jackson said in one of his songs. " I don't want to spend my life being a color " It really gave me pause to think about the depth of that statement. This is an excellent piece of poetic art. It is well written and has some good wisdom in its thoughts. I am glad I read it this day. We all need to realize that we all have the same wants and needs, to love and be loved. I enjoyed reading this well written piece of poetic art... John

I found your poem very poignant and timely. I have, over the years, looked at the practice of slavery and asked how could Jefferson...Washington and others hold lofty views about the rights of man and ignore what was at their door. The other question I ask is how a black man could collect black brothers and sell them into bondage? The slave trade required a collector of bodies and a buyer. Anyway, found your poem most thought provoking.

I think you will find my story, REBA, interesting. Anyway enjoyed your postings...keep at it...you have a talent

I see both points in this Write. I see an argument for both sides. I think for me it is the way it is approached... should not be as protest, but awareness lest it continues but in different forms. I also understand the divide for some.

I have no answer, but let it be for healing and togetherness, not protest and retribution.

Well written.

Bravo! People must begin telling the truth, and ALL of the truth. This victim mentality that has been pressed into the minds of blacks by leftist whites and charlatan black "leaders" has done a lot of harm to both blacks and whites, ubt mostly to blacks.

We must cry racism whenever we are faced with the notion we take responsibility.

Today many blacks turn our criminals into heroes and our cheaters into champions.

Valuing emotion over logic, & lies over truth, has become our constant companions.

BRILLIANT lines! Keep speaking up!

lancellot, I commend you for sticking to your principles, regardless of the outcome. I have to say that I agree with that math teacher and what he told you that day too (just as you do) BUT...somebody has to do it...don't they???...don't they???

I guess I'd rather be a live chicken than a dead duck...mostly...I am so dismayed sometimes, so outraged sometimes, and it's poetry like this extremely thought-provoking write that gives me hope.

Thank you very much, Dawn. I don't know, when the chips are down, you never know what you are capable of. We often surprise ourselves.

Hi lancellot. I grew up in an environment without racial prejudice of any kind, hard to believe nowadays, back then, in New Zealand, there was so little discrimination I didn't understand things I saw when watching TV. I thank you for the having the courage to speak so potently of your viewpoint as I know others who feel just as strongly about their heritage as you have depicted here. They don't speak up, afraid of the scorn they know awaits them from both sides of the divide. By the way, I truly enjoyed the poem, flowed well, told a story well and was a pleasure to read, alf

This was interesting for me because I knew how honest you were being when you wrote it. If not for the authors notes you provided I never would've known that. You must have spent along time on it.. and I appreciated your story.

Good use of rhymed couplets
Excellent enjambment
A good account of your experience and may that of many persons.
i have no argument against you stating the fact but I know that remembering and reminding others of the past new hate emerges. We have intermarried and have children that are descendants of all races. Should we hate each other?I personally think not.i love people black and white alike because a black grandmother is as good and loving as a black grandpa
Good luck in the conest

What happened before any of us were born can never be changed. All, black and white, need to change the way we behave today. A powerful poem, Lancellot. Thanks for writing. In my mind, you deserved to win the contest.

Hi, Lance,

You make so many valid points. Have we not learned anything from history? The generations don't stand a chance of healing it they won't allow healing to begin.

Instead, we dwell on on what the media deems is newsworthy, blow it of proportion on -both- sides, and so the cycle keeps repeating. Nobody gains anything but more hatred to feed on.

In some says it seem as if we have backslid instead of moving forward to make a better, more united nation as a people.

I agree with you, I hope the day comes when your son and his sons and daughters can just look to another day in February and smile -- make it a great day.

Wish I had a sixer left. Don't sell yourself short on the contest. This is excellent.

Good luck in the contest.

Cheers & Blessings
Keep Smilin'... Jax (*.*)
