Coltrane has been one of my all time favorite musicians. You have written an excellent Momento and noting his death on your day of birth made this all the more interesting. As always, fascinating and informative notes to accompany this poem.

    Hi! I'm so happy you enjoyed this selection. I know it isn't the happiest of poems, but I appreciate the positive reactions. He really was a legendary musician who died too young. Thanks for the great comments.

The Memento is in proper syllable count and rhyme for the potlatch Poetry Challenge, and one who shares the same birthday is a good target for subject.
Excelllent post.

    Hi LIJ:

    I really did struggle with this topic. Finally I tried for others who share the same birthday, and there were some awesome ones, but still nothing struck me. Then it struck me as a rite of passage, in a way. You know the story of the Guff? One soul exchanged for another, a death for a birth? And here I ended up.

    I'll share with you one of the attempts that didn't make it past inspection lol I bounced the other three mostly because I couldn't get them to fit in my NaPoWriMo theme.

    My eyes just aren?t that good no more,
    my bones all crack and pop;
    oh my!
    But, Father Time won?t hold that door,
    that clock he just won?t stop!
    But why?

    Though fabulous I want to be;
    I?m afraid it?s just not
    nifty.
    My age has reached an apogee
    that?s really best forgot,
    FIFTY!

    Happy Easter!

    Guff? Only what I heard on The Seventh Sign, with Demi Moore. I did borrow the heavy, the Temple guard, the Wandering Jew, who slapped Jesus, as a character in one of my stories.Fifty? Young whippersnapper. I like your reject as well as the other, pertneart.

    I spelled it wrong, it's Guf. I first heard it in that movie, too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guf

    Maybe there's a future story in there :)

I know songs and poems and movies because I like them, not because of who did them or who is in them, or who sings them. My bad, but I do remember the pieces and a different kind of tribute.

    Hi Barb,

    Thanks for taking the time to read and review. It took me a bit to figure out a way to tie this one into my NaPoWriMo theme. I wrote four poems to get to this one lol I appreciate your comments.

A very well-written memento poem. Your birthdate was saddened by the death of Coltrane a great well known American jazz saxophonist. Very interesting author notes to accompany your memento poem.

    Hi Sandra,

    I appreciate you taking the time to read and review. I bounced my first three attempts at this topic, and though it had a sadder note, I think it really was the best one. The bonus was being able to tie it into my NaPo book. Thanks for the great comments. I'll share one of my bounced attempts:
    It?s said the mirror doesn?t lie,
    and that?s just fine by me ?
    and you?
    My supple skin is wash and dry,
    no wrinkles will you see ?
    it?s true.

    I?ve come of age to vote and drink,
    the mirror?s lips are sealed;
    and mine.
    Regardless of what you might think,
    my birthday?s been repealed;
    divine!

    This would also be an e excellent memento poem entry. We all see the Years clearly in our mirrors.

Thank you for sharing this tribute to the late John Coltrane. In my eclectic music collection, he represents a different kind of music. Listening to him always leaves me with a sense of peace. (Don't worry about reaching 50 - some of us have traveled on this planet for a bit longer.)

    Hi Patty,

    I'm not all that worried about 50. So funny that with each passing year it just comes in stride. The underlying theme is really that we never know how much time we have, or won't have. It is all a mystery. Thanks for the great review. I'm happy you enjoyed the tribute to Coltrane.

Fifty this year? Gosh, I'd better put my order for that zimmer frame in now. Have to allow 3 months at least for otter mail to the States! This is a fine tribute to Mr Coltrane, I think you've done him good service. Nicely done, Kim!

    Hi Craig,

    You can order me the model that doesn't come with the gum boots, that should save some money ;) How do you get along with that zimmer frame out in the paddock? ;)

    Thanks for a fun review, Craig!

How nice that you chose his birthday to write about.

It's so sad when we lose someone we admire.

You wrote an excellent Momento Poem. Thank you for participating in Potlatch. 8-)

    Hi Yvonne:

    No, I chose my birthday, just like you directed. Sadly, he died the day I was born. My first three attempts at this topic just didn't do it for me lol Here is the first one, for your amusement. (I'm really not stressing about 50 lol)

    It just might become scandalous
    you know, I?m not eighteen;
    but still?
    am told that I?ll be fabulous,
    though I?m not all that keen;
    the thrill?

    of a birthday cake with candles
    once set my night on fire;
    nifty!
    Now my middle?s all love handles,
    the cake?s a fun?ral pyre;
    FIFTY!

    Thanks for a great topic and review.

    I love it. It's so cute. I didn't think much about my age until I hit 60. That sounded kinda old, so when I hit 70, it was a piece of cake. I'll be 74 this year. Yayyyy! The only thing is I'm still about 8 inside. 8-)

very interesting art work
for these words written
Unfortunately we have to die
but we go to a better place
0r unfortunately a not so good place.
We grow older every day and an artist
like this will be missed so much.
