Your piece uses fine form an rhythm to bring back a kinder, more community oriented time when people interacted with their neighbors instead of hiding from them. I remember those times with fondness. You may not have like everyone you knew but you had manners because that's what everyone expected of you. Nice work.

This piece brought back so many similar memories, Roy. The open doors, the open hearts. I'm afraid are all gone, but thank you for bringing me back for a peek at what used to be. I loved it! Best, JohnC

I too remember those days when we could play outside until dark or walk to the other side of town as long as we were home by supper time, we were good. Sadly, those days are gone. I rarely see children outside playing in our neighborhood.
Your poem was a nice reminder of better days.

Blessings
Janet

Those were the good old days, Roy. We never locked our door when I was growing up. I live in the country now, and even though there is not much activity out here, I still lock our doors. Years ago murder was almost unheard of around here. Now it is in the local paper quite often.

I remember those days of the past, Roy when smiles were seen on many faces because all were friends. Now, as we see the world the eyes that stare back belong to strangers. What went wrong? Thank you for opening my eyes.

Some blame the problems on integrated neighborhoods, neighborhood blight, you name it. The real problem as I see it is the steady encroaching hate promoted by Satan the Devil. he hates us because God loves us. So as the anti god of love, he promotes hatred. What we see in the prevalent presence of hate is due in large part to his campaign of spreading hatred and distrust.

I can relate I grew up in Berkeley in the 60's and 70's when "free roaming" children were everywhere. I had lots of memories of my old neighborhood and feel our modern nieghorhoods are just not family friendly anymore.

This is a totally different world than when we grew up. We were satisfied just having a roof over our heads. No doors were locked. We borrowed certain food items from neighbors until our parents' monthly check came around. If someone needed help, friends and family helped. Thank you for sharing a great memory.

Sadly, those days are gone forever, Roy. You did a great job
sharing what has taken their place. People have become aloof,
scared, and less likely to engage in friendly conversation. Most
wall themselves from contact with others, if there is any, then it's
quick and general. Wow, 20 miles hitchhiking--would never be
done today. Your poem read well with good end rhymes and
internal rhymes, smooth flow, and a great and true, but sad, message.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Hello Roy,
What wonderful memories, and you expressed your feelings so well. This is worthy of a six, but alas, I'm bone dry. In our neighborhood, you were everyone's child, and if someone's mom saw you doing something wrong, they didn't hesitate to yell at you. A simpler, much more pleasant time. We've lost a lot unfortunately.
Have a blessed day.
Tom
