Very well written. Often viewed as a bad omen you have managed to change this reader's viewpoint of the raven. Perhaps it gave you hope? A good read and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

The raven means a lot of different things in different cultures, so I'm playing around with it a bit. Much appreciated. GMG

I loved the beginnings of this story, and the setting is fantastic, not quite as confronting as the original Poe version, but a fabulous look into this harbinger of doom, looked upon more as a companion to melancholy, but I love the adding to the reputation of this fabled bird, beautifully written G, blessings Roy

Many thanks for reading along with this one, Roy. I happen to love ravens as we have two which visit us from time to time. G

Yes, they can almost be pets, same as magpies, related to crows I think

Your story is well written and you know how to keep your readers interested.
However, unlike your narrator, I don't think I'd find much comfort in a raven.
Looking forward to the next instalment.
Thanks for sharing.

I love a story like this. It could very well be true about the raven. I once had a dove that flew into my yard and followed me around. He/she did that for a long time, but eventually, I never saw it again. I'm anxious for your next post.

Your narrator is fortunate to have a raven keep him company in what I percieve as a time of licking the wounds of a great loss. Sadly, pain must be borne to progress. Kate
I feel uncomfortable querying the master, but I'm that way out this evening.
The first may just be the Irish:
The door itself was rusty, coppery colour and looked weathered > the Scots would put rather The door itself was rusty, a coppery colour, and looked weathered
But the second:
to gain entrance, I entered > seems a redundancy that goes against what you teach us...

This is an intriguing beginning to your story. I really like ravens and I've always been drawn to them. According to some mythology, the Raven represents magic, power and shows a light in dark corners. I can't wait to see where this goes.

I like the picture, It gives us a visual into your story.
You have an interesting story line here. Your bird is a friendly one not foreboding like Edgar Allan Poe's. You tickled my interest and left me wondering just where you are heading and why. Good Job. Nancy:)

Hi G,
I'm glad to see you again! Having come back from a couple of years away, I'm having trouble even remembering everyone, never mind finding everyone. I've been back for just a few months now and am still getting back into the swing of things.
I really liked the beginning of this story, the raven has me fascinated. Is it her? I think it must be.
Waiting for the next one!
Susan :)

Ravens seem to have different associations in different cultures. I think of them as birds of ill omen, as in 'Macbeth'. You build up a feeling of tension here which is difficult to define. You subtly bring in hints as to the background of the narrator. This makes the reader keen to read the next chapter. I'm not sure a raven would sing 'sweetly'- the ones in the Tower of London certainly don't! There is a typing error - 'ether' not 'either'? But minor points- I look forward to the continuation!

Yep, that was a typo in ether. Ravens can be quite soft, we have 2 that visit us regularly in the garden. Many thanks GMG

Well you must have a different variety!
