Super write to inform other countries about our special bird. I killed a snake when I was in the country. It was necessary, couldn't have a swamp tiger come into the house. I didn't want to kill it, or any snakes but it's part of life in the bush. I thought your information about our Kookaburra, its secret, and those predator chicks! K xx

I am so glad you liked it Kay. If there?s enough interest I might consider writing more and compiling them into a book. Thank you greatly for the six stars. Such an encouragement.

You could write about our native animals; a book would be good. Americans are very interested. K xx

Enjoyed this, it was very interesting. I remember the song. I am a Texan, I don't know why I know it. That nasty secret is awful, and depressing. This is not unknown in nature. I found out when I had cars, that a momma cat will eat her babies if they are sickly, or if she has too many. Icky. I never looked at her the same. Good informative, interesting story. Give us more from your book. Karen

Thank you very much Karen. I am pleased you found it interesting and informative. There is no book as yet but I am thinking of compiling all my stories about Australiana into a book, if there is enough interest.

Wow, Wendy, thank you so much for this wealth of information about the kookaburra! I'm ashamed to say I had very little knowledge about this bird and certainly not its "nasty little secret." I am reassured, however, that their little hook is lost as they develop into mature birds and that the act of "siblicide" (never previously heard of that word) is nature's way of increasing the chick's survival in the nest. Fascinating and well researched read! Well done! Debbie

Hi Wendy,

This was a great little read, informative and clean in presentation.

We are warned not to feed them - as the birds then have expectations which are not appreciated by other picnickers, - just like the seagulls who are the bane of my existence! lol

The chicks are responsible for what is called siblicide - they frequently kill their siblings. - to be fair, I've considered this many times myself...

All the best
G

Lol. I wrote recently about the Seagull Patrol in Sydney. There is a restaurant precinct near the Opera House which was bothered by seagulls. Now there are dogs which are trained to chase them away. The dogs and their owner/trainers are paid handsomely to walk up and down past the outdoor dining area. The dogs have special permission to be in dining areas, never beg for food but will pose beside diners on request.
Now about that siblicide problem ?.
Many thanks for reviewing. I enjoyed your review a lot.
I haven?t seen you around lately. Hope all is well.
