Hello Karen :)
I enjoyed reading your post.
I can relate to each of your points as I've fallen foul to most of them!
Love your tone, you're direct and funny and make me want to read what you have to say.
Best wishes as always, Debra

Thank you so much for the read. I have read all the stories so far, and have gotten some help out of all of them. I have a hard time writing without humor. Ever since the pain got so bad 13 years ago, humor has been my main Pain medicine. I see funny in most things now. :-) I hope you write a chapter. You could write one about getting lost in poetry. You would be good at that. Karen :-)

Way to give it to us straight, Karen! Humor helps a lot because we've all gotten three and felt devastated (or angry)--

And you are quite right that FanStory ought not take over our lives!

As in any group there will be some we can't seem to click with.

Give it an effort but do not hesitate to use "mute" if it's making your experience a downer.

98% of the time I find, as you stressed, being friendly and asking/answering questions will prove fruitful.

I've been here since 2007. The relationships made here have made a positive difference in my life!

Excellent points about maximum posts two a day, limit of six "6-star" reviews a week, the SUPER easy way to vote, and to sign up to be notified when voting booths open!

Tom answers all questions and if he can help, he will. I've posted poetry as a story and (duh) vise versa... He's saved the day!

I'm learning new things from this book for newbies...

I'd say it is helpful for all!

Karenina

Thank you, sweetie. You improved my day! Oh, I got Grammarly; maybe my bad dialogue grammar is behind me. Karen

    I have Grammarly...

I think I need the preschool version!

    LOL....

Boy, when it started did my story light up! This is kinda depressing. :-)

Grammarly reminds me if my granny nagging me about dangling a participle!

Did you spring for the paid "business" level version?

    Don't!

I did a "trial" and wanted to heavenly laptop out my window!

    Argh!

Thanks for adding to the book. I think your experience will resonate with most people here so what you said makes a lot of sense. It's easy to get "sucked in" and find that the rest of your life will complain. So it's good you gave the advice to keep balanced.

I like the way you stress balance in this. If you're not enjoying your writing, then it's time to take a step back and reassess. You deliver your advice with self-deprecating humour and this makes it more palatable.

Excellent advice! I can only hope that newbies are reading these chapters and taking the advice on board (says me - I'm still a relative newbie, but I'd like to think I'm working things out as I go). The ratings one is a big one. I've had a couple of brand newbies give me a 3. I've graciously and very politely referred them to the information in the Q&A. One quoted it back at me - incorrectly - and then disappeared. The other one kept reviewing other pieces of mine as 3s, so after one or two gentle more reminders, I muted him - the only time I have so far.

Yep, some do not learn. I have muted 3 people. I am relatively new. I wrote my first poem in August 2023. :-) Karen

Thank you for the advice, and speaking about feedback, sometimes I ignore the replies, I barely have time to review and correct my mistakes, Tell me how are you now?

Winter is bad for me. But I am okay. I just slow down and watch more Roku. I cook more. Weird huh? How are you? Karen

I especially like you warning people not to beat themselves up over things they can't control or do wrong. It is for learning and writing, just as you say. You get my last six stars because you wrote this in an amusing way and made the most good points of all those writing for the book.

You are just the sweetest thing ever. Quite frankly I have a hard time writing anything perfectly straight without humor. It is just my nature, I see the funny. Even more so now that I have a lot of pain, It is odd, A lot of things are funny to me, I don't take things so seriously anymore. A lot of the time, whenever I can, if something does not make me happy, I drop it, him, or her. Life is short. Be Happy. :-) Karen
