Thank you for gifting us with this precious Easter pelf! I was a kid in the privileged fifties, but my parents were loaded with stories of the sacrifices they had to make. Thank you for memorializing this remarkable woman.

Dear Jim, I just wonder, as you mention nothing negative about the verse, whether this might have been a slip of your finger (which has happened to me on occasions). If not, thank you anyway. Debbie

What a lovely tale you've shared Debbie, when one hears these stories, the restorative powers of faith in the powers of self denial becomes a symbol of hope for the rest of us. Beautifully written in classic ballad style, beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

This is quite an unusual story about a little girl with an unusual willpower. Most children might have taken at least one little bite of chocolate. You did a remarkable job of telling the entire story in rhyme.

This is a little different for your Sunday treasure, but still an interesting tale. We have a Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum here in town; I bet that egg and its story would fit right in!
I've read of those who were near starved during the War, yet she and her family never touched it. That's pretty amazing.
Thanks for the change of pace Easter feel good story, Debbie:-)
By the way, I can't remember if you've done Poe? I'm reading a biography on him; he was not the morbid, depressed and depressing figure that merchandisers paint him as to sell his books and other merch (at least until the last three years of his life).
Have a wonderful Easter, and we'll see you next week if not sooner.

Thank you so much, Pam, for your kind and thoughtful comments which I always love to read! Yes, I have done Poe, I think towards the end of last year But I'm a bit nervous now that you'll know so much more. Happy Easter! Debbie xo

I apologize, I should have looked through your portfolio first. I thought you'd done Poe, but he's on my mind because I'm reading the book.
Another thought: Harriett Beecher Stowe. Did you know that Mark Twain purchased a house next door to hers in Hartford, CT because he wanted to be close to her; that's how much HE (one of the greatest writers of his generation) was inspired by her. Both of their homes are museums, and I walked through both several years ago. I had just finished "Uncle Tom's Cabin" at the time.
Okay, that's enough of my suggestions and stories!

This was a wonderful story told in poem form. I'm glad you shared the meaning behind each stanza, and I'm also glad you listed the definition of "pelf." I had never heard that word before. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.

Thank you so much for your kind review, Jess! Yes, it's a rather obscure and old-fashioned word, 'pelf,' but fits so perfectly in rhyme:)) Take care Debbie
Comment from Dolly'sPoems
This is such a lovely story Debbie and of course this egg would not be edible now after so long, but the anticipation of the taste lasted a lifetime. My Mother remembered rationing and always scraped every last morsel off the butter wrapper and did not waste an ounce of food. Rationing teaches us to be frugal.
I only had chocolate when my Grandma visited once every two weeks, I was really excited about her visit as we also had tinned mandarin oranges and condensed milk! It sounds disgusting now, but back then it was a treat.
Your story is well rhymed with a good metre and I adored this sentimental story for Easter Sunday Debbie, love Dolly x x x

Thank you so much, Dolly, for this wonderful review! I'm absolutely delighted you enjoyed. It came on local radio and I just loved the story amid all the doom and gloom of usual news. Love Debbie x

I love this story, told well in verse. I've been wondering if candy kept that long would have any flavor left. I admired the tenacity of Sybil. Were her name Verna, that egg would NOT have lasted!

What an amazing story. People from that era were a different breed for sure. They knew what it meant to wait for things and to keep things for "later". My mother passed last year at age 98 and while going through her house we found medications for me when I was two years old. I guess you never could tell if I would need it. Thanks for sharing.

An outstanding poem that this reader read over and over again.
An easy read that tells a story about that little girl and what that gift meant to her in more ways than on.
Your poem has excellent flow and pace as all poems should have.
Thank you for sharing.

Debbie,
What a delightful story, and it's true!! I love true stories, even if I do write fantasy.
How did you come by the story? It was an incredible act of obedience on the part of Sybil. For a child to resist eating chocolate must have been quite a trial. I'm guessing her future including much of it, though not from the original egg.
Love and hugs,
Rhonda
