I love this poem. It has all the reasons we celebrate on the fourth. We need to be reminded of patriotism and love of country more today than ever before as we face a challenging vote that will change us to a dictatorship or a socialistic state.

Hi Debi, a poem of truth and tribute to our veterans. My great-great grandfather fought for the Union during the civil war, and my dad, like your father, fought in WWII.
Of special note:
So Happy Birthday, Old Glory
May Stars and Stripes forever wave
(Amen)
Great photo choice. I did recognize your dad in the upper right-hand corner. A timely poem. Well done. Xo. M

Your poem makes me proud to be an American and appreciate what our vets have done for us. Yes, freedom has never been free. Thank you vets for what you have done, and thank you Debi for reminding us of their sacrifices.

Steve, so good to hear of so many who are so on board with our flag and the vets. I fear if we don't keep writing and talking about it, will it be lost on the next generation.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the kind words for my Independence poem. They means the world to me.
Thanks again, my dear friend. Love, Debi

My pleasure, Debi. We can't let the younger generation forget.

Thank you for sharing this perfectly written poem as a reminder of why we celebrate Independence Day. I feel the meaning has gotten lost in the partying along with the lack of patriotism. I appreciate you sharing this.

Hi Debi, you won't believe this, but the Fourth of July has always been celebrated in Denmark for many reasons. Our queen used to attend and the some American presidents and vice presidents as well. Look it up. I'm not making this up. Not many know about it, but I do and so do all Danes. Happy fourth of July. I'm proud being half American. Ulla xcx

Hi there Ulla, I did remember that you were part American, as I do love writing about that part of America that is so meaningful. And it is so good to hear of so many who are so on board with our flag and the vets.

QC, sounds like you tried everything to be a part of the patriotism and then got to watch your grandson join. A proud moment for sure.
And so good to hear of so many who are so on board with our flag and the vets. I fear if we don't keep writing and talking about it, will it be lost on the next generation. Of course not in your case with your grandson for sure.

Hi, Debi!
Thank you for this. We too often think of Independence Day as hot dogs, ball games, fireworks, and a long weekend. Such a hollow view of such a big day.
Thank you for your family's and boyfriend's service. I'm sorry for the pain it caused you. My dad was Navy Reserves until he graduated, then Air Force. He was too young for Korea and too old for Viet Nam. My hubby was Air Force during Nam and is 100% disabled from that part of his life. My son-in-law was Army during our last war, and is also disabled. It's so hard to know how to assist those who've given so much for us.
Thank you, Debi, for making the reality of our freedom so real in such great poem.
Blessings and hugs,
Deb

Comment from Dr. Nad
Lovely poem Debi. We can never honor enough, those who have sacrificed for all the rest of us. A part of me has always felt guilty because I never served in the military. When I was a senior in high school my random selective service number was 04 out of Lansing Michigan. Without question, I would've been called up once I graduated. Vietnam was running down and they abolished the draft in early 1972 just a couple months before I graduated. If drafted I would've gone, but when I graduated they weren't looking to increase the size of the military, they were decreasing it. (That last diatribe was evidence of my persistent guilt.)
Back to your poem. I like how you incorporated your losses but didn't restrict the affirmation to those of your own family. Thank you for acknowledging our military across the country across the centuries. This deserves a six star rating.
