A powerful and moving poem about a widely misunderstood and common disorder that many people suffer from. Thanks for sharing and thanks for bringing this poem forward. I often tell people that Substack or Medium are platforms that are easy to use to promote your work to a broader audience

As someone who has a friend who is bipolar (as is her daughter) I can tell you that your poem seems an excellent description, and it is beautifully poignant -- well done!

Hi Pam, I hear what you're saying, but to truly understand it is quite an impossible task as I've never suffered from anything like that. But you have my full attention and sympathy. Ulla:)))

It takes a lot of courage to write about something so personal and so painful. I know a bit about bi-polar because my husband's best friend when he was growing up, the son of the person who brought my husband and me together, suffered from it.

While it may not seem like it, your physical disabilities may be working in your favor, as the manic phase can cause one to do fun but reckless things. Luckily, physical limitations preclude that. Writing is one of the fun things from which you're not precluded, to your benefit and that of your readers. I hope, as you do, that the crash, after this manic phase, never comes or, if it does, that it comes in a tolerable way.

Meanwhile, your poem explains bipolar disorder in a way that allows the average reader to understand not just the visible effects, but how they feel to the one going through them. Your poem is very visceral. That's hard enough to achieve, and yet you, as you do in all your poetry, manage it in excellent rhyme and rhythm.

I have known several people with this disease and it is so difficult to deal with. Your poem does a good job describing what happens to a person in the midst of their mania phase. I applaud you for sharing it with your friends on Fanstory so that they can better understand the things you deal with. Nice job!

It has to be so unsettling, not knowing which phase will inhibit your body and mind when. Is there ever a time when you're just even-keeled, when you're not either manic or depressive?

Thank you for opening up your soul to us this way. That can't have been easy, so I applaud you for your bravery. xo

I'm giving you a six on this because I am myself have suffered in the past from bipolar disorder. As of the last few years, I have been relatively free of the problem however I do have times when my mind seems to run too much during the night and don't get enough sleep. I am glad you shared this because I know there are a lot of other people out there who may identify with it as well. Patricia.

Well if the writing helps you deal with things then that's a good thing. I once heard someone speak at my church at the time, about being bipolar. It was a long time ago so I don't remember most of it, just that I found it really interesting. She did mention that it was really hard to be bipolar in church because contrary to people's assumptions it wasn't just about a train of thought or state of mind. Being bipolar means there's a chemical imbalance in the brain and it takes real medication, not just scripture and self-help books, to deal with it.
First two lines in your poem stick out to me the most. I don't know why, it just hits deep. Thanks for sharing

I am so sorry to hear that you suffer from this disease. Every day is hard on so many people but you have an uphill battle everyday that most of us do not.
Your poem is very well written and gives the reader a glimpse of your life.

Blessings
Janet
