There's almost an element of a sonnet here, with these rhymed quatrains and a closing couplet, in roughly iambic pentameter, but it does veer off in some spots. I thought the images drove the poem, there was a sharp tone to the voice, and the sarcastic mood gets us pondering on our love of violence, our fascination with pain. We can turn the coin over but the face on the other side is almost the same. So there is no escape. estory

Some very powerful truths about human nature that could be difficult to accept as our own.

I love this line:
The roses release such a deceiving, scented smoke,
You don't realize they've already perished.

Very nice. Good luck in the contest

Unfortunately, we suffer more pain from ones we thought loved us and held us dear than the stranger lurking in the shadows on the street. They start off with kindness to lure us in and then slowly tighten the noose, The nature of such human being is totally out of my realm of thinking.

The way you describe how the abuser starts out, just like us, but grows to love being able to take a beautiful innocence and mash it and destroy it, that was some incredibly thought provoking lines. People do have the tendencies to take what they want. Some act on those desires and some don't. Great poem. Gretchen

This poem, Once Bitten Twice Shy, holds both the idiom's meaning as well as the polar opposite personality which uses the effects of this human trait to suppress and defeat others.

This was a fascinating piece. I was really intrigued when you talked about humans being quite mild compared to beaten dogs. I thought that was really strong. Some of the imagery was quite dark as well such as "the string wrapped around our own throat remains." An intriguing piece. I enjoyed reading it.

Love it. Humanity in a nutshell. We all {or most of us} just go along without a whimper. Expecting the worst, talking about it, but never acting on it.

Hello! Wondering why the 2-star review again? Is there anything I could do to improve the poem?

I appreciate the way you explore the darker parts human nature. The way you show pain and forgiveness is powerful. Your ability to share such intense emotions through your writing is so impressive. It's a well written poem that leaves a lasting impression.

It is a sad thing to think that the ones who are supposed to love us. The most may well be the ones who will hurt us the very worst. I enjoyed your pool very much and it flows very well whenever read aloud. Patricia.
