Oh, my! I'm crying - not for the poor squirrel or the spider but just imagining you shooting that spider. I know they can get really big but generally, I feel the outdoors is their territory. If in my house, well, I shoot them with Windex and adios via the plumbing system. I do have a mild form of agoraphobia but not as bad as yours! Loved your humor, Tom!

Hello Helen,
of all things, I came home one day and my kids had rented Arachnophobia. Of course I had to watch it, but I don't know why. I was standing on my chair yelling at the TV set and cursing the kids for renting such a wicked movie. I hadn't been that scared since I watched the Blob when my Dad took me to the drive-in theatre.
If he (or she) had been further away, or perhaps moving rapidly in a direction 180 degrees away from me, I might have spared it, but just the thought that it could sneak up on me freaked me out. I don't know what the average life span of a spider is, but as big as it was, I suspect it might not have lived much longer, so perhaps we can view it as a mercy killing. Thanks so much for the exceptional review and the six gal. I appreciate it so much.
Have a blessed evening.

OMG any spider that you can hear moving across the leaves is too big for me!!! I would have done the same thing and i still would have left the area just n case he escaped the gun shot. and don't get me started on Deliverance. That movie gave me nightmares for years! Awesome story, Tom. Glad to see you posting

Hello Marilyn,
thanks so much for the exceptional review and the thoughtful comments gal. I had no idea what Deliverance was going to be about before I saw it, but once it was in my mind, I couldn't forget it. I'm such a pessimist I was sure that somehow I would discover a well hidden still in the woods while I was hunting and would find myself in a most uncomfortable spot. As it was, aside from the spider, the worst thing that happened to me when hunting down there was running across snakes and once when I had gone deep into a part of the woods I'd never been before, a pack of dogs of all breeds came bounding through the woods. I wasn't sure if they were wild or what. Fortunately, they looked me over and decided to go the other way. Thanks again gal.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

Did you eat the squirrels? Not sure they are on the menu in England, but when you are hungry I guess you would eat anything to survive. Your annual wage was rather meagre. You must have been terrified to shoot a spider and it's a wonder you didn't shoot your foot off Tom! The poor spider didn't count on meeting up with you. Fear can make us do crazy things. A fascinating read about your younger self Tom, I enjoyed your story, love Dolly x x x

Thanks so much Dolly for the delightful review and comments gal. Yes, I used to skin and eat the squirrels, though they don't have much meat on them, even the large ones. We used to eat a fair amount of fresh water fish as well, and twice, when we were visiting friends on John's Island, I picked up rabbits off the road that had just been killed. I would never have thought I would do such a thing, but they were fresh and actually quite tasty. I'm really not a heathen, though I might appear that way at times. There was no fear of shooting off my foot, as the spider was about five feet away from me when I shot it. I once had a snake start sunning itself on a sunny February day at the canal. I passed by it before I realized it was there, and even though I was very close to it, when I fired a shot, I missed and it slithered back into the canal. I wasn't going to eat it, I just don't like snakes anymore than I like spiders.
Have a blessed evening gal.

You are pretty handy with that gun Tom! Ha ha ha. I don't eat meat, but if you're really hungry, I reckon you would eat anything. I admire your tenacious spirit to be so resourceful, love Dolly x x x
