A "sitting" ovation, Karen!!! (Only because I am at the computer and can't type and stand..LOL You entered the new year saying you wanted to write a western and you have already accomplished it and in very good style. Now that's saying a lot! Well done!

Another winner after dinner. I was hungry to read than I was to et. How did you post a person's picture without the red hair? Fabulously funny... for a Western. All that was missing was the "fastest gun in the West," Don Knotts.

I loved most of the funny Westerns. "Cat Ballou" being a favorite. Thank you for the sixes. I did research and everything. I am glad I did it. Now, I will tackle a biography. I appreciate the read and kind words. Karen

Eww, death by viper bites. That sounds worse than being shot.

Did you write this for the Western Story contest and not meet the deadline?

As always, you've given us lots of interesting characters with even more interesting names.

And justice prevailed:-)

I have been trying to write a western for years. My goal had no timeline or any requirements to meet. And, I absolutely abhor blind contests. It was hard enough to work outside my wheelhouse. Thanks for the read and kindness. My next hurdle? A biography. In Winter, I nest and slow down. A perfect time to do new things. :-) Karen

I'm surprised you didn't enter this in one of the western contests.
They had been unhappy when he captured and turned over their brother - Who is 'he'?
And he listened to it and believed in it. - Hmmm. Mixed metaphor? 'Listened' to his eye?
They both had prices on their heads too - maybe a comma before 'too'?
I didn't mess with grammar much, bein' as how it was mostly told in a vernacular.
Best wishes.

This was fun, Karen and I see your muse has come calling again.
One little glitch I did spot a couple of times.
You inadvertantly slipped from third to first person (example: I go by H.Q. Jones) and I think there was another lower down the story.
This is so easy to do as I well know with my own stories.

I will edit. Thanks for the catch. That happens a lot with me, I do not know why. Karen

Try writing a whole book in 1st then switching and rewriting it in 3rd LOL
So I understand and feel your pain :-)

I counted six glitches. I am surprised. I thank you again. My "free" grammar program, isn't so hot. :-)

Grammar editors don't often pick up tense errors I have found. They are more concerned about whether you need a comma or a full stop in place.
Thats why I have so much fun with my tenses and POV as well.

Well, I fixed those errors, and found a few more. Karen

Hello Karen,
it's always nice to see the good guys win. Sometimes it seems like the bad guys hold all the cards. I enjoyed the names. Jan has been looking at ancestry and some of the family names she came across are downright weird. Thanks for sharing.
Have a blessed evening gal.
Tom

I finally wrote my western. It is a little bit of a thing, but I did it. Thanks for the read. I did my research, and there were names much weirder than the ones I used out there! Karen

    I loved the names!

I have been reading since I was three. that's sixty six years of magazines, paperbacks, hardbacks, softbacks, audio tapes, cd's, televsion and movies, Vhs, DVD's, Cable, Streaming, and the internet.
So, my brain has tons of names in there. Like Shakespeare said, all the srories have already been written. We just repackage them.:-) Love ya, say hi to Jan. I told my sisters about your recipe. They can't wait. We view bacon as it's own food group. Karen
reply by T B Botts on 14-Jan-2025
    HI Karen,
I can't recall how I referenced bacon, it must have been the recipe for the potato soup I made tonight. I have to admit, I make some really good soups, but honestly, how can you go wrong when you're using bacon, potatoes, minced garlic and cooked onions? I'm so glad I had to attend Home Ec with a student I worked with. I learned so much. Plus it gives Jan a break. Last night she made a chicken sandwich with chicken breasts, hoagie rolls, mayo, sauteed' onions and green peppers and grated cheese. She puts it under the broiler for a few minutes. I swear, she could sell them for a fine profit if she wanted to.

This was a really enjoyable story. The names were quirky but the brothers were cool. Too bad it was so quick to kill off the bad guys, who certainly deserved it. Mostly got the sheriff's job because Hardly was wise enough to realize he could earn more as a bounty hunter. What a smart concept.
