Well said. It's a fear that lurks in the back of my mind and with the lack of trust that seems to be overwhelming us these days, keeping your cards closed to your chest is the best security of all. Glad you didn't have your story stolen. Thanks for sharing this with us. Stay well. Frank

Thank you. My story occurred before FanStory, so I did not feel secure in going forward with my story. I thank God for this wonderful site.

You're very welcome and I'm glad everything worked out.

Thank you for this cautionary tale, Nomi! I can imagine it happening even here because our works are read by and not necessarily reviewed by "Standard" reviewers whom we don't know. But we do have a timestamp of when we posted here so we have evidence that it is our work and not of someone else. Well told!

Thank you. It certainly gives one comfort to be a part of an organization that is peopled with persons of integrity, such as your wonderful self.

Whoa! I'm so sorry that Johnny's story was so close to being yours! Thank goodness you were smart and savvy because that would have been a horrible life lesson.
Thanks for the cautionary tale. It's sobering but necessary, because writers often love to talk about what they're currently involved in.
Well done "fiction" story, Nomi!

Thank you. That occurred years ago, well before the establishing of sites like FanStory.

I'm so sorry, Nomi, this incident nearly happened to you because I can understand how it would undermine confidence to share creativity and "secret ambitions." Your excellent example here also explains how Moses' status made his version seem much more credible over that of a more lowly employee. Maybe one day you might publish your version. Thanks for sharing, Nomi. Warm wishes Debbie

Thank you Debbie. In the actual version, we were both computer programmers, the other guy was the son of a millionaire who had an uncle with ties to Walt Disney. He bragged that he and some friends had actually written the script to a move that was made primarily because of his connections.

Very nice story - nicely written, too.
My wife and I wrote a novella about a couple whose work was stolen by the manager of a writing contest. He took all the good ideas and made them his own under a different name. (We got our revenge.)
Best wishes.

I am sorry that you were victimized, at the same time I am overjoyed that you got a measure of justice.

This cautionary tale makes a good point: be careful who you trust. The story could have been longer. I grew attached to Johnny, who had vivid daydreams and took definite steps to chase his dreams. Then the story moved really quickly and Johnny didn't get a lot of character development after that. I did like the anonymous ticket. It shows a hint of remorse in Moses Allen, giving his character a bit more depth.

I kept it short in case I decide to give the story more fully developed treatment. I am sorry that I cheated you out of a more enjoyable story.
-
I don't feel cheated, but if you ever post a more fully developed version, I'd love to read it.

This post points out how it is not wise to trust everyone. Even writers, who one would think would be more interested in truth and creativity over personal profit, can have some bad eggs in the group. Thanks for the author notes.

Thank you. I believe that it is perfectly normal to be inspired by someone else's work and you go ahead and develop something on your own. It is not okay however, to outright steal someone else's work.
-
Right, I totally agree with you.
Comment from Ric Myworld
Sadly, this happens more often than anyone thinks. Many people are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, even if it calls for stealing someone else's hard work and ideas. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Ric. I am often inspired to write something that someone else's work inspired. I do not however, steal what they have done. I most often go in a different direction, using the inspiration to create something different.

Wow! This story really shows how easily you can be robbed of something that is yours and in the most crafty of ways and without even realising it. Unfortunately we would like to think we can trust people we know, but how much do we know them really!
You learned a very valuable lesson just like Johnny in the story but it was too late and it cost him greatly.
Thanks for sharing this great story that you tell very well indeed, I enjoyed it.
Well done.
Best Wishes
Nicki

I am in agreement with you. The only person one can really trust is God. No matter how well we know somebody we still don't know they're private or secret lives. We only know they're public lives. You did an excellent job writing this. Thank you for sharing your God given talent and wisdom with us.
