Harry,

What a fun story about being dumb. Did you ever see those girls again and did your car get fixed? I bet you felt a huge adrenaline rush while you were going that fast. It had to be a little scary going that fast. The great thing is you lived to tell the story.

Well done my friend

Cecilia

Yes, we all have done REALLY stupid and dangerous things when we were younger. Your angels must've been looking out for you, Harry, and the passengers in your car. Many have died in their stupidity. The roads are even more dangerous nowadays.

Thanks for sharing your true story and the need for speed.
Take care!
Sal :))

*shhhh...* -- don't tell on me. I wouldn't want to sully my rep as a girly-girl -- I like to drive fast too. *grin* (But I am uncomfortable reading what the girls did... I'm an old Catholic woman now...)

"It was a 1966 Buick Skylark Gran Sport. " OH! Love it! You wouldn't believe the cars I drove in my younger days...

"We started down the road very slow and turned out my headlights. " << add "I" to "...I turned out..."

Yes, we all do dumb things in our youth. Well-written story. :)

You are fortunate you were not harmed by driving so many miles over the speed limit. But, like you said, teens act, and think later. I enjoyed this well-written story filled with suspense. I was glad you were able to escape the sheriff. Great story.

What a ride, Harry! I could virtually feel myself in that car, flying over those hills, running faster and faster...and scared stiff! I know you weren't but how close you must have come to absolute tragedy. But it's what you do when you're young because you think you're invincible. Ten years ago I was involved in a head-on car crash in which the other party, an elderly woman (probably drunk), lost control of her car, crossed over into our lane and slammed at speed into our car, killing herself in the process and breaking my back. I'd always thought that, being encased in a seat in a tank-like car, that actually suffered little damage (hers was completely crushed), would be adequate protection. I suppose it did save our lives.
This is another of your stories in which the horror is palpable. You have tremendous skill and memory, recreating events like this that impact strongly on the reader. There are a couple of edits: sheriff went (past) us; going way to(o) fast in their cars.
Well done! I'm so thankful you survived to tell the tale. Take care:) Debbie

Holy crap, Harry. I thought I was wild, dopey and dumb at 17-20... I turn over the trophy to you, my friend.

I never got near 130... I topped out at 105 in my dad's LeMans on the highway.

Good story and reminiscing.

John

I really enjoyed reading your story! The way you described your car and the wild chase with the girls was so fun to read. You made me feel like I was right there with you in that crazy moment. Your tone is light and fun - I love that. Thanks for sharing this adventure!

Oh my goodness, you could have killed yourself here, including your friends and any innocent bystanders, but youngsters are often reckless and you were lucky there wasn't an accident.

I pulled over a drunk driver once and just as I was handing him a breath test, he drove off! The chase was on, he had a jaguar and I had an old allegro panda car (look it up) it is not a fast car. He jumped the lights on red and I followed him. English roads are narrow with a lot of traffic about and it was 6pm so the roads were busy. I almost knocked a cyclist off his bike chasing this mad driver when suddenly he did a handbrake turn in the road and spun round hitting a tree and I crashed into him. Another traffic cop was following me, and we arrested the driver who paid a fine and was banned from driving for 3 years. We could have all been killed. My car was a wreck. But at least he did not get away! He had his 13 year old son in the car with him and we were all unharmed.

Driving crazy on the road kills, and I am glad you survived Harry.

I enjoyed your story as it was full of excitement, an adrenaline rush that you obviously enjoyed, love Dolly x x x

Enjoyed your storytelling but I'm aghast at the racing! I guess that's why God gave me only daughters and one doesn't ever want to drive. All I can say is praise God for protecting you! And now I'm wondering if you know Judiverse as she's a native Indiana lady who often writes about Indiana history.
By the way, there are a few places which could be tightened in your prose as there was some unnecessary repetition like the darkness.

Thank you for sharing your memories of those wild days. It reminded me of that scene from the Rat Race.

lol I swear, it's amazing we are all still alive after the dumb stuff we pulled in our youth! When you're young you feel so untouchable and that's a very bad thing. I had fun reading your story. It might have been dumb but i'll bet it was amazing lol thanks for sharing
