A great tribute to a great man as you describe your Dad! It is never easy to finally lose someone who is so much a figure you look up to and admire and love. Well written Gary... cheers, Jack

The tribute in the Author Notes gives new meaning to the last line, and adds depth in the metaphor...once a seaman, always, and you do him proud. :)

Nicely done. I enjoyed reading and reviewing this poem. My father was also a Navy man. It was his career. Good job on this and great photo, too.

My husband is a pilot. After retiring, he consistantly goes back to the pleasure and assurence that flying gives him. Your poem is full of very poignant imagery. Your love for your father shines through. Excellent poem. Blessings, Linda

This must have been hard for you through out thr years as a young man wanting to see his dad. I'm sure you are proud of your dad for doing what he felt was best. Good imagery here and it touched me with a sadness and being proud too. Keep on writing like you do.
Hugs, Nicole

Hi deepwater.
This is an excellent poem with keen turns of phrase, like "console your life". I always feel a bit melancholy when I view old photographs. Very moving.

I rate poetry solely on the emotions it evokes in me. This one made me go 'wow' at the end of it. Even though it loses it's rhythm here and there I still enjoyed it tremendously.

This sentence:

** You've lived the life of a sailor around the world you did sail ** I had to read twice. A comma between sailor and around may help with the readability.

Still a powerful poem, which really spoke to my heart. A lovely tribute.

What a lovely tribute to your
sailor father, Gary - an emotional
write - he must of been away from
home so much during your years of
growing up.

Thank you for sharing this, my friend.

Margaret.

As I was reading this verse, I was wondering if this about a real person or not. I enjoyed it. However, it seemed that this sailor loved the sea more than anything else. It took him away from many things that he could have loved even more, which seemed a little baleful.

A very nice tribute to a sailor. I loved the words and imagery you used. Can see why you have earned the honors you've received. You might be interested in reading my Legend in a Poem contest winner called "Seaman's Farewell" about my brother and his life on the destroyer escourt, USS Badger. Good job on this fine poem.
