Wow! What a "cliff-hanger" Pardon the pun...LOL..Good writing for sure, Susan. One sentence in here tripped me up just a bit: "His face beams up at me, sweat glistening, handsome and kind." How about: "His handsome face is sweating as he beams up at me."
Good chapter in any event, Susan. Bravo! Bob

Hi Bob, thank you! I guess I needed to do some research on climbing, but this just came to me, after G. left and he spoke of a friend who fell off Capitan. SO sad, his leaving and his good friend too. I used the person dropping as our friends on FS leaving? Just gone. So glad you liked this attempt my friend. Susan

Oh, what a nightmare -
and such a waste of life.
I have to admit, I could never understand such daring,
which is the climbers own choice, because they are not
only risking their own life, but some poor soul who has
to risk theirs when going to the rescue. seems all wrong
to me.
A great write, Susan.

Hi Margaret! ME neither. I can't even watch them on the television. It's too scary. I climbed trees as a child tho, and loved it? I don't know. I lost that desire somewhere along the way! Thank God. I ride a tall horse, but other than that, well. I am a land lover? Thank you for liking this my friend. hugs, Susan

Wow, Susan, that must have been one hell of a fanfriend. I get it though. The climb toward our goals, and the links that tie us together. I'm sorry your friend left, but your metaphor is an apt one. I hope you'll keep climbing. Peace, Lee

Hi Lee, sorry for this slow reply...I wrote this, thinking of G. I sure miss him. He was kind and helpful. And he once said, "we make friends here, and then they are just gone." Hence this story. Also he lost a friend climbing Capitan I guess. SO sad. I hope I don't fall , but I feel I am. Thanks Lee, I am glad you "got" this one. Suse

Is this story real, if so you are brave. I have tried abseiling and had a safety harness I was terrified. A good story with good imagery. A good write well done. Mary

Hi Susan:)
As a metaphor for losing someone dear, this is a powerful story. I have climbed many mountains and I know the thrill of the summit and exhilaration of danger on the climb. I could feel all those emotions surge through my body again as I read your story.
Most of all I can imagine the fear of waiting for rescue that might never come.
This story could have many endings:
1. You could have cut the rope.
2. Your new husband could have cut the rope.
3. you husband might have found a away to stop the fall.
I'm only showing these suggestion as possible continuations of a great story. I am still wondering; who was good Fanfriend that inspired the story?
Love and Irish hugs,
Roger

HI Roger! Wow, lots of good ideas. Did you know G? E.P.Thomas? He was so nice and helpful too. Sure miss his input. He lost a friend on Capitan years ago. SO sad. IT's great that you have climbed, I have no guts for it. I may have years ago, but lost the desire somewhere? I climbed trees a lot as a child tho! I am glad I brought back some memories, hope only good ones. AND thanks for the hugs, feels nice. lol. Luv you too. Suse

I didn't much interaction with E. P. Thomas. I never climbed Capitan, but I did climb the north face of The Grand Teton. If I known how it was rated, I never would have tried. Lol

Oh my. I am certainly glad you are still here Roger! Wow, what a grand adventure tho! G. said he would not do it again either! Wow. So rating means level of difficulty? Maybe like ski slopes. I prefer to stay low! Or maybe just as high as the back of my poor old horse! ") S.

i guess moutain climbing was just my way of confronting fear. i still fear height in many situations.
I remember looking down the olympic ski slope in Steamboat Springs, colorado in the summer time. all I could think was that I wouldn't jump off that slope if someone held agun on me. I alwato shut fear out.
Rogerys have to look up or close my eyes

Wow, I am told to get over spiders I should HOLD ONE???????? THERE IS NO WAY, NO WAY! EVEN, I don't think, if someone was going to shoot me. I don't know. You are brave to even try to conquer a fear like that! geez. S.

Oh my God that was so unexpected, so tragic and unbelievable. You have brought out out the poignancy of the situation very graphically, The art work is brilliant and in keeping with the story. For a marriage to end in this abrupt manner is really sad and you have done full justice to the story. The element of surprise is well brought out as is the language used to describe this incident. Very good work--neat and precise also. Gooloom

That sure is an excellent tribute to your friend who has left this site. Your piece made fine reading.
However,
it would be what tore us apart- How did you know in advance? It's better to leave it
It will be a very long time before someone comes to find us- here you are presuming somebody will find you. I might have to wait for long for someone to find us.

I'm not sure I would describe this as horror as much as a very sad love story. You did a good job of building the suspense in this short story, describing the loneliness of the climb with just the two of you, the moment of unsettling wind, even the lone eagle soaring overhead, I can almost hear his eerie call. Well done.

Hi Cookie, a fanfriend who just left FS, climbed this when he was young and lost a friend who fell. I have seen this, when I was a child, years ago, but never climb. That picture is neat! And scary too! Thank you for reading this for me Cookie! HUG!! Susan
